How to get a code, paperclip?

In my old saturn i could use a paperclip on a couple of pins and the engine light would flash and you could get the code by counting the number of flashes etc...

is there something like this that can be done on my 04 GT? they want to charge me 60$ to get it read and i really dont want to drop that kind of coin to get a mechanic to do a 5 second job.... Also since my engine light has been on I'm noticing some higher fuel consumption. I know these cars are hard on gas but it seems its getting worse.

go you have a autozone near you, or a o riellys auto parts store, and ANY auto parts store.

Just about EVERY single place lets to get codes scanned for FREE.

No autozones, from canada here, we have Marshland, napa, APM, Crappy tire, midway, priceline.

I dont think any of them pull codes, I take it the paperclip trick doesnt work.

and all the shops ive called charge over 50$, what i dont understand is; isnt them pulling a code for free a good way to possible make cash from the repair that follows? for example charge 50$ for the code, i say forget it. or do it for free and possibly make a bunch of cash from parts labour etc? i dont get it.

no one does it for free out here.

its ratarded.

I could sell you my scanner for $50 if you wanted.

its the cheap blue one from crappy tire.

or you could pick one up yourself.

I just read that mister transmission does a free 21 point inspection including pulling a code. I'm going to see how that works out tomorrow. I that doesnt work, I'll probably want to buy that reader from you matt, its a pretty good deal.

Mr. Transmission reads codes for free,
the two codes that came up had to do with my cooling temperature being too high he said, So I guess i need a new thermostat.

after replacing the thermostat do i need to go back and get the code reset? or does the car do it by itself?
