How to clean your throttle body.

Items Needed To Perform Said Task:
Basic Tools
Rags/Paper Towels
Throttle Body Cleaner “Brake cleaner, or Carb Cleaner works too. If you have to any degreaser will get the job done. I used CBC Carb cleaner and it worked very well.”
New Gasket “Unless you got a spacer/block off plate type deal or have recently replaced it. If that’s you I doubt you need this write up. I thought I could get away without a new gasket but when I got it off I saw that the coolant had already been getting past it, and then I had to use RTV until I got a new gasket. So don’t risk it.”
10-20 Minutes

Step1: Disconnect all the sensors and move their wires aside.

Step2: Remove your intake. If you have a box just remove the tubing.

Step3: Disconnect the throttle cables. The outer most one simply pushes off with your thumb.

To remove the inner most one first pull the cable out of its channel like so.

Then place your finger under the cable and push it towards the other side of the car while you pretend you’re a ricer in the school parking lot trying to be cool revving your engine by hand.

Step4: Remove the cables bracket.

Step5: Remove the throttle body bracket. I do believe the L67s don’t have this so if that’s you go to the next step. Now for the people who do have to deal with this pita. It is held in place by two 8MM bolts one is pretty easy to get to. The other is behind the bracket and can’t really be seen but it’s there I promise.

The only way to get it out is to go under the crossover pipe with a wrench and make a bunch of small turns. You don’t have to get it all the way out, just lose.

After years of intense research and debate bluegtp91 and I have reached the conclusion that the best way to reinstall this bracket is by throwing it in a trashcan.

Step6: Now we can finally pull the Throttle Body off. Before you start, I would suggest putting some rags under it over the crossover and Trans because you will get a little coolant.

Start removing the three 10mm bolts that hold the Throttle Body to the U.I.M. Here are their locations.

Step7: Pull the Throttle Body off. Then remove the screen a dental pick makes easy work of this just pull the retainer together and then out.

Then gently pop the screen out.

Step8: remove the MAF sensor with a torxs bit I believe It’s a T-30 but I’m not certain.

Step9: Start cleaning, I think that parts pretty self explanatory. Don’t forget to clean up the gasket area before reinstalling.

Step10: Put it all back together. Start it up and check for leaks if there aren’t any “yay you did it” if there are you need to fix them.

becuase i tried to clean mine using the long brush trick, but damn if i only got the butterfly clean and some area around the inlet, need to pop that baby off to get at her..

If its a L26 NA that would be key ;)

Nice job with the pics and use of paint.

Has there been a consensus on the screen? I've heard conflicting views on whether removing it messes with airflow but I assume it would be a negligable difference.

Is popping the throttle cables off 100% needed? Either way nice whitup the pictures help us slower ones.

no it's not but I find it's easier to clean with it completly off the car. I'm very picky when it comes to cleaning stuff on my car so I just do what ever it takes to get the results I want. But it only takes like 3 seconds to take the cables off.

The gasket I got (felpro) has that orange area on a plastic gasket? Looks like it should do the job right just different than what I see here

04+ Guys, be careful of the crossover if your car is hot when you go to do this. I was disassembling my MAF from my intake hose earlier and my knuckle touched the crossover. My skin sounded like bacon in a frying pan.
