How much ATF?

This has probably been covered several times, but I tried several searches and didn't really come up with an answer.

'99 GTP with 4L65E - how much ATF for filter change? I've put in 8 quarts, so far and it's barely on the stick. The book said something like 7.4 quarts, I think. Keep in mind, though, it's cold and I've not driven it and checked it when hot since I don't want to take it out when it's low on oil. It does go into gear fine, through all of them.

Does this sound unusual to anyone but me? My 4T60E in our '93 is right around 7 or 8 qts. but I know these are not the same transmissions.

Run it threw the gears a few times and get it filled up to the operating range and then drive it and check it again.

7.2 quarts for a pan drop and filter change. I usually put in 6 quarts, let idle till warm, shift through gears, check fluid and add till showing on stick. Drive it for a bit, maybe 20 minutes, then check again and fill to top of XXXs. Then continue to check everyday for a couple days to make sure it is not leaking or low at all.

your gtp has a 4t65e

haha

You're right. Not sure why I slipped that "L" in there. Guess I had "truck" on my brain:o

It took 9 full quarts to bring it up to the top of the hatch mark when warm. I will continue to keep my eyes on the level for the next few times it's driven. Thanks everyone.

swear i seen 11 quarts in the manual once, unless that was with the converter empty as well

Ive had 3 GP's 2 of them had rebuilt trans while I owned them including the one im driving now and I keep them half a quarter over the hash thats what ive always been reccomended to do and I added a bottle of lucas when I replaced the diff in june
