How importat the VE tune?

Reason i'm asking, is because i have not done it yet.
I was told it wasn't really necessary.
That all it does it maintains the car running when MAF sensor goes bad.
How would not doing a VE tune affect my current tune?:th_scratchhead:
I have already covered or done MAF,02'S and timing tuning.
What else is there to tune?

the better your VE tune, the better your trims are from the beginning. i barely had to change my MAF table after the VE tune.

I started with the VE tune just because I want to learn all I can, however as Josh was telling me the argument can go either way on whether you need the VE tune or not. I feel that it is kind of a safe mode if my MAF does go bad so I'd prefer to tune it.

Agreed. If my MAF failed I don't want the PCM to rely on the factory VE tables to drive "blind". I'd rather it have a good picture of how the car breathes in its current state. Hence the VE tune.

I also found tuning goes better with a good VE base. I think it is used for more than we know.

anyone got it good enough to where the car dies a bunch of times?

Heh....me actually.

I've done it twice, but the weather changes so much between the times I actually get to drive it that it basically does me no good. I'm always fiddling with the engine anyway.

A lot of pcm code doesn't even reference the VE if the MAF is unplugged. The only year I know that is pretty much guarenteed to work is 00 code. I guess I'm pretty biased to 00 code since it's pretty universal, without the BS found in other year code..

i dunno. my friend who was doing the tuning said if you get it really dialed in the car starts dying while youre tuning it.

I think that's backwards. The point of a VE tune is to make it run better without the sensors in a worse case scenario.

When you first start, it runs like poo....but as you progress, it idles and runs better.

:th_laugh-pointup:

I would fire a bullet into your friend and find someone else to do your tuning. :th_thumbsup-wink:

my car didn't idle all that bad but it's basically stock... I'm sure if I did some more work to it it would go crazy

we havent finished the tuning yet. it idles and cruises better already. we only did about an hour of VE and MAF tuning together.

no ve tune. Don't need one, if your maf fails why would you keep driving it? Who cares how your car runs when the maf fails lol, get a new maf. I wouldn't keep driving on my spare tire when one of my good ones went bad, would you? Stop wasting you time with ve tunes. I've been told by the best that they are useless. Tune the maf accordingly, it's really not hard. I tuned a gtp over emails all he did was gave me his average fuel trims, i gave him a number and bam (life the chef) his car is dialed in. Now i can tune wot stuff since his cruising trims are damn near perfect, actually better than my own car :th_angry2:

If you are having that much trouble dialing in fuel trims then there is something else going on, maybe a vac leak, who knows? I've always gotten it on 3-4 tries (depending on severity) on everyone else's cars and i'm not a genius or anything (well i am a legend in my own mind :D) it's just taking what you've been taught, then changing it to make it easier. they say take 1/2 of the average, adjust the maf accordingly. I take 65% and that works so much better for me, gets so close on the first try.
