How High Is To High?

I have found a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP sedan that I am very interested in trading my car for. I noticed in the for sale/trade ad that he has replaced the motor and just completed a trans service, which lead me to believe there must be high miles on the car or its been beat to a pulp. Sure enough, there are 280 000 kms (173 983 miles) on the odo. He does live out of town and most of the miles are highway travel/comuting miles. I am waiting for an email back from him listing what has been changed/replaced on the car. I am just looking for opinions regarding buying high milage GTPs and what to look for. Thanks! Oh and fyi, he is asking $4000 Cdn for the car and that would be a fair price for mine as well.

Here is what his lasest email said...

"it has newer struts and strut bearings in front brand new struts in back i have all new filters just dont have time to put in it has a newer altanator brand new battery transmission was flushed at my work will have fresh oil change before change is made always ran synthetic"

Dude 4000$ is a down payment on a new car. Paying 4k for a used 170k mile car is not worth it. No matter what he says you can count on problems within the next 25k miles. With the econemy you can probably get a newer GP for a very low price.

I Put 5k down on my car, paid a total of $17k for it with 8k miles. 200$ payments a month and paid off in 1.5 years.

Buy NEW/NEWER

uhh, the exchange rate for canadian is higher, so what approx. u.s. $ is that? bought my 98gtp sedan w/186k for $ 2800. u.s. of course

With the miles that high the car could be starting to accumulate little problems that you cant see. The build quality on these cars is not great, so if this thing was abused you can be sure it will cost you a fortune to keep running. There are plenty of GTP's out there in the used car market, wait for one that was well cared for.
