How great is the new 2012 Impala LTZ?



The indy engine used to be a v8 honda. Now its gm turbo v6.

There is this basic idea at gm: how can we meet our goals for the lowest cost. Hence pushrod engines. They meet power, weight, and fuel economy goals gm had at the time.

But lets face it, they cant meet the fuel goals anymore.

If they were seriously concerned about fuel they would change speed limits to a maximum of 50 mph and create strict punishment for even 5 over. Ie 10 over is license for a week.

Fuel consumption goes up quite a bit above this speed.


But hey, lets build us a 568 bbc and throw a massive two lobe non helical no rotor coating blower.

52mpg is FLEET average. AKA make a bunch of crappy Volt cars to sell, even if you don't sell them, in order to raise your fleet average MPG. Most cars will probably be itty bitty 4 cylinders with direct injection and turbos. They'll still put out V8 cars in flag models, even if they have to downsize them... remember Yamaha's small V8 in the SHO's of the late 90s? Still a V8 even if it's got small displacement. GM already got rid of the V6 in the Malibu a few years back, despite it being somewhat superior to the 2.4 in highway mileage and a lot in performance. I think this current move toward bigger and bigger V8s is going to decline again, just like it did in the 70s.

I don't know what GM is thinking. They're still relying on brute displacement for power, when Ford is already a step ahead of them using force inductioned 4 and 6 cylinders to boost their fleet average and performance. Ford has done their research and has been playing with these engine designs for a long time, so a lot of the kinks have been worked out. GM just seems to be twiddling their thumbs.

I have no idea what the heck Fiat is doing with Dodge/Chrysler... Seems they're just using it as a cash cow to fatten their wallets using retro names and styling, with no plans of longevity when they need to adapt to the new regulations. The only thing I've even heard from them is the new Challenger platform is supposed to be scaled down a bit. I guess you can classify their new Pentastar V6 as advancement too.
 
WOW was not expecting this many replys. So if we wind back a bit to my question so the new impala a big NO NO? What about the older impala the 06-09 SS, is that a car better than the new ones? Pretty much im looking for as i did say in my other thread is a great 4 door car thats pretty quick and really what do you guys think. Between these cars which of them are great cars and will last for a long time and be ok to lightly mod cause i wont be able to put major mods like turbo or S/C until later on: 04+ GP GTP, GP GXP, Impala SS 06-09. Also the cobalts you guys say they are great cars and fast too so would they be better than the car i listed.

Bottom line i want a great and quick 4 door car that does not drink gas like the tahoes and etc. And for some reason i really really want the 06-09 Impala SS or the GP GXP, are they great to have and also to mod? I think i want them mainly because i test drove a GP gxp last month and even though i did not have room to keep on the gas it was really bad ass and it s had HUD.

Lett's see those forced induction rides in 10 years after being in their respective fields- I'm already laughing at the Ecoboost V6 F series.

Get away from GM. Get a G37.
 


I like the G37 and i love the G8 both cars i would love to get especially the G8 GT but the only issue is price. SO what about the Impala SS 06-09 are they great, quick, good aftermarket support and can last if maintained well
 
Also if i got the impala SS the one with the 5.3 V8 will it be a great and long lasting car or will it give problems? i really like the impala SS but i dont want a car that i have to constantly spend money on to fix. Is the GP GXP or V8 Impala SS ok cars or should i just stick the the GTP?
 
I'd buy a 5.3L SS in a heartbeat for a nice daily- But then, I'm not looking for a race car, like everyone else here. :th_shakinghead1:
 


06+ ss has same tranny as gtp's, cept with 60hp more. lots of tranny issues.

I love my impala but when/if i get a new car. wont be another impala. specially a new one. 3.6l= no trq and 6 speed auto it never knows what gear it wants. you know...cause no trq lol.
thread in the impala site about someone wanting to trade their SS for new impala, he also got the same reply(bad idea)
 
Seems gxp/ss means racecar to their owners.

If i had the money back then i probably would have bought one, thrown a catback on it and called it a day.

Much better car in the aspects i care about, yet still disposable.
