How far to mod before reliablilty become an issue?

I have an '05 Comp G. Currently stock. I have a used CAI and 3.4" pulley on the way.

CAI will go in. Pulley will just sit on the shelf until other mods are in. I practically got it for free.

I've read bluegtp91's thread many time and plan on following it to a T.

Is a 3.4" pulley with all the supporting mods still a reliable setup? This is a daily driven family car. lol. That's why I ask. Should I maybe step back to a 3.6? Also, what kind I gas mileage can I expect with a 3.4 and 3.6 setup?

A big part of the reliability is how you drive it. If you treat it like a rental car, stock will have troubles. Gas mileage and how long the engine lasts with a standard 3.4 setup will depend a lot on how good the tune is. Get a good tune and you should see an improvement in gas mileage and have a long lasting engine.

OK. Anyone in the Panama City, FL area know of any places to tune? I'm actually about 45 minutes north. I'm thinking I'm stuck with a mail order tune because I'm in such a rural area. Everything else shouldn't be a problem.

with u having a gen V blower.. id stick to a 3.6 pulley to start. a 3.4 setup on a a gen III is the same as a 3.6 on gen V. a good tune with supporting mods should net better gas mileage than stock with "normal" driving.... of course if u stay in boost all the time ur gonna have ****ty gas mileage.

There was a guy that tuned customer cars, but he doesn't do it anymore. He lives north of PCB on 231. I'm in Enterprise, AL, but I don't have tuning software...

However, you can meet local people on panamacitylsx.com
02 ws6 ta on here is the owner of the site (same name)

....they are trying to have a get together for haloween weekend....

What he said about the pulley size.

3.4 on 97-03 = 3.6 on 04+

Stick w/ a 3.6 Gen V won't need a smaller pulley like the prev years. Im in Pensacola what town are you in. So far I had no luck w/ tuners around my area so I went with a Overkill PCM and so far so good.

reliability drops considerably the second you start to mod the car. when you drop pulleys, it drops even more.

its only a matter of time.

Agreed, axles, transmission...its all gonna sh1t on you like the poo cocktail supreme.

A base tuned PCM, intake, 3.6", and headers...REALLY probably won't kill your car if you don't drive it like a moron. Then again, you can break anything if you drive it stupid...even a Aveo.

Thanks guys. Know a guy that had an '04 Comp G and had a 3.4", CAI, Tune, 3" DP, and he ran fine. That's who I'm buying the pulley and CAI from lol. So, I guess maybe I should swap for a 3.6" or keep the 3.4" and take it real easy. Decisions, Decisions.

Any guesstimates on track times with a basic 3.6" setup on this car?

3.6"...knock is WAY easier to be had on a GenV car...a 3.4" on a GenV is cam territory...or you could go with a 3.4" and hit it with E85 or Methanol Injection...there are always ways to get around knock.

Ok. I'm thinking maybe Intercooler. E85 is about nonexistent around here. Methanol isn't going to be practical, unless I only went WOT at the track. I'm either going with a 3.6 or a 3.4" and more mods than I planned. Maybe I'll just get the wife a car lol.

$500 beater Honda FTW.

I had a '86 Civic for like a week I bought for $100 before it chucked a rod through the bottom of the block...granted I bought it like that...just wanted to see how long it would last...and it ALMOST went 7 full days hah. Had over 320K on it too...factory clutch too...oh boy it was fun.

Nice. Thanks for that help. I think I may keep the 3.4 and just wait to put it on until I can get everything else done. Probably do headers and a few other little things. Then save up for the cam/tune/intercooler all at once.

Never hurts to keep the stock pulley...like you said just toss everything else on there. It'll for sure be safer then.

More importantly get something to scan with like a aerofroce scan gauge before u drop pulley sizes so u can see wht the knocks looking like.

I know, but its not always in the best interest of the person to always get a scanner...especially if they don't plan to drop pulley sizes right away.
