How does my build plan look?

Hey all, I'm planning out my build for my 2000 GTP that will probably be taking place sometime this Fall. I'm waiting on getting my Trans Am running in tip top shape before I start tearing apart my DD.

Car is at 113k miles right now, so I'm starting to get antsy about the state of my stock Timing Chain. Car currently has 3.4" pulley, plog, Home Depot intake and cone filter, 180* tstat, u-bend delete, modded fuel rails for intercooler, and a few suspension mods. I went 13.7 @ 99mph last summer while spinning the street tires through the 200' mark.

I'm wanting to get well into the 12s on slicks to be faster than my buddy with a Nitrous Mustang (12.7). I've read both stickies (on here and ClubGP.com) regarding safely modding the 3800 and the requirements for different pulley sizes. I'm going a little off the beaten path, so I want some advice. I first want to know if these parts are going to work well together. I then would like to know what pulley size I should run to maximize the output of the combo...I know it's not an exact science, so a starting pulley size would be acceptable, and I can go smaller from there.

Here is my planned mod list:

- VS Cam
- Comp Cams Lifters
- 3/8" Pushrods
- Stock 1.6 Rockers
- LS6 (90#) Springs...maybe 105# Springs...what do you think?
- New retainers, locks and seals
- Rollmaster Single Timing Chain
- Electric Water Pump
- 42# Injectors
- Walbro Fuel Pump w/ Re-wire Kit
- Gen V Blower w/ MPS
- Northstar TB
- 2" Phenolic Intercooler w/ Bosch Pump and ZZP FMHE
- 1" Phenolic Spacer placed below the Intercooler
- Devil's Own Meth Injection Kit w/ Dual Nozzles tapped into the 1" Spacer. I need to get in contact with a Devil's Own tech and get the specifics on a kit...I plan on spraying as much meth/water mixture through my car as I can.
- Ported L32 LIM
- Stock L67 Block and Heads...I don't have the money to upgrade the heads yet. I'm sure I'll be fine for now. If a deal pops up in the For Sale section on a good set of ported heads, I'll buy them, but I'm not dumping $2000+ on a set right now.
- OBX Headers (the ones that have the mis-bent crossover)...I bought them for $50, so I'm going to use them.
- No Catalytic Converter
- Exhaust consisting of 3" piping, a glasspack muffler, and turbo style mufflers.
- Aeroforce Wideband to feed info to my Aeroforce Gauge (also watching KR).

Basicly, I'm writing this off as preventive maintenence/replacement for the Timing Chain.

So...any suggestions? Anything you would add or remove to this list? What pulley size should I start out with when scanning for KR? In addiction to the Walbro Pump, Pump Re-wire, Modded Rails, and 42# Injectors, are there anymore upgrades I should be considering for the fuel system?

PS: I will be taking the car to ZZP in Ohio for them to tune it properly.

PPS: I have the hood clearance for the 3" worth of spacing between the LIM and the blower, plus the size of the Gen V, so that is not an issue.

Thanks all.

- VS Cam
- Comp Cams Lifters (I'd consider LS7, CC's have less preload and are noisy overall)
- 3/8" Pushrods (neither your cam or springs require them, you could easily use stock)
- Stock 1.6 Rockers
- LS6 (90#) Springs...maybe 105# Springs...what do you think? (With a VS cam, I think you can use L76 springs, better rate overall, less wear on tensioner)
- New retainers, locks and seals (You can reuse the locks)
- Rollmaster Single Timing Chain (Singles are known to break aren't they? I'd go new stock replacement)
- Electric Water Pump (There's very little value to it. For the cost, you can upgrade to a bigger cam etc)
- 42# Injectors (Your build won't benefit from 42's. Actually the firehose spray pattern of a larger injector will hurt atomization)
- Walbro Fuel Pump w/ Re-wire Kit (Take a look at or call TREPerformance, 255lph for a much better price)
- Ported L32 LIM (Port your stock LIM and open up the hole for the Gen V, save the cash)
(You forgot earplugs)
- Aeroforce Wideband to feed info to my Aeroforce Gauge (also watching KR).

I see a lot of things I'd do differently, but like you said.. you are going in a different direction on this one. I agree, you are.

- 42# Injectors (Your build won't benefit from 42's. Actually the firehose spray pattern of a larger injector will hurt atomization)

Someone on ClubGP recommended 60# Injectors...

- Walbro Fuel Pump w/ Re-wire Kit (Take a look at or call TREPerformance, 255lph for a much better price)

Will do.

- Exhaust consisting of 3" piping, a glasspack muffler, and turbo style mufflers. (You forgot earplugs)

I thought the Turbo Style Mufflers were the quiet ones. I'm trying to stay quiet and all of the exhaust topics I've been reading about quiet mufflers mentions Turbo Mufflers.

I see a lot of things I'd do differently, but like you said.. you are going in a different direction on this one. I agree, you are.

Do share...I'm open for friendly discussion...no flaming, please :D

There are online calculators for this sort of thing.

Depending on the size of injector that will limit you to a power level.

You went 13.7 on that setup... WOW... Factory Freak!

Looks like a solid build if you follow what Bill has said. I've yet to see anyone get any gains off the electric w/p. They are expensive and kind of a pain to deal with, i'd run stock.

You can run a DO5 nozzle for your meth to start off with but why not skip the electric WP and Meth and just go e85? You will make a ton more power.

I would also second the 60# injectors because it allows you to use e85.

Oh and i don't see that you have got a Wideband o2. This could be quite handy for tuning. I'd buy a wideband if your going to do a good build like you plan.

Put a 3" block on top of your blower now and see if the hood will close. Don't think there will be a need for 1" spacer.

everything else looks good per what bill suggested and...

Tune, tune, tune.

IMO you should take the money you're going to give ZZP for a tune and buy a DHP with it.
L76 springs will work fine with the VS.

Looks like an interesting build. Keep us updated on what it makes/runs.

I can recommend a lot of parts too, but the fact is that the larger the injector the less atomization of fuel and the worse it burns. Fuel lights up when it's a mist aka atomization. You always want the "right" size injector so that you have enough without going lean and running out of fuel, and yet..you don't want anything too large.

I saw the ClubGP thread too. Some of the same suggestions I gave you and a few different ones. When one guy says "do this" and 5 other people don't. It kinda makes you wonder what the reasoning is for the minority. I'm all for getting as much advice and knowledge as possible before buying and building and like how you approached it. When one guy says something different, ask for the reasoning. It might be better than the other 4-5 folks.

Ok, taking people's suggestions into consideration...I'm dropping the Meth Injection.

So...with this build, with a Gen V blower...what pulley can I safely run using 93 Octane? 3.0?

with e85, IC, cam and slicks you should be deep into 12's. Id recommend an XP cam over the VS but I guess theres not much of a difference. You can still use XP on stock heads. Also confused why you feel like you need the spacer?

If you don't go IC at least try E85. The amount of power you can gain is awesome.

I want to but there are two things holding me back...

1. It's my DD and I don't need to be paying more per gallon than I already do...it is more expensive than premium, right?

2. I don't want to go on a road trip, get low on gas and not be able to find an E85 station.

If it was my Trans Am, I would change over in a heartbeat. Somethings should stay with the race car.
