Horrible noise 1998 Grand Prix GTP

I have this exact same noise coming from my 98 GTP. Which exact parts do I need to fix this? It's confusing how the guy describes it in the video description. My uncle always works on my cars so I have to find the parts online

does your a/c work? turn it on. If the noise goes away its the clutch hub for the a/c compressor rubbing. You can get the loaner tools at autozone to reset the gap. I cant for the life of me right now remember the proper gap for some reason 30 thousanths comes up in my mind.

Replace the pulley. Sounds like the bearing is bad. I'd buy like a whole new A/C compressor and whatever parts you don't end up needing, return and get your money back. But I would start with the pulley.

Eric The Car Guy has a great video on diagnosing an A/C compressor noises.

the follow up video to the one you posted shows how to shrink the air gap. the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsacpKR_sA8 at 6:30 you will see he is going to use the tool to pull the clutch off. You are not going to pull it off entirely like him. you just use it to make the air gap bigger.

The noise doesn't necessarily mean the bearing is bad. If your a/c works and you engage the a/c and the noise goes away then its just the clutch gap. If the noise is still present with the a/c running then the bearing could be bad. But in my experience the video and the whirling sound its making makes me think its the air gap. ( plus in the video you can see how close the clutch is to the pulley)

Ok thanks for the help, how much would the parts cost for the whole ac assembly? Or can I just replace the bearing or pully

RockAuto has your A/C compressor bearing for $8. However they do not sell the pulley so you would have to replace just the bearing, which is the part that actually goes bad. I'd try and find a video on YouTube on how to remove bearings. I think you just pound them out, but watch a video first. If you have the money, a whole new A/C compressor is $135 on RockAuto. That would completely solve your problem, but would put you out $135. Try the bearing first.

I'd personally just replace the compressor, this is something that could leave you stranded somewhere if it seizes up. Or get the ac bypass pulley until you can do the compressor. That is assuming you check it out and determine it's not just the gap or anything simple.

I'm going to order one today. Would this one be good or do you suggest a certain brand site?

I'd go ahead and but it. But it does say it's been used so check to make sure it's not broken first. Remember if you're gonna replace this yourself, you'll have to get new refrigerant and dispose of the old stuff.

Did you say whether or not your a/c works? you realize changing the compressor will require refill of your system.

You can have your system evacuated, replace it, then take it back to the same place to have it recharged so you save on the refrigerant.
