I took my fogs off and the bulbs in them are 898 for any future readers

Any 8xx bulb will work difference between them is the length and output.

out of 880, 881, 884, 889, 893, 894, 896 which would be closest to the 898?

Well out of those the closest to 898 is 896. Cause 894 is one lower than 896 and so on so forth

im just asking cause my friend got the 893 i think? and its burning his fogs making them smoke or something he said... but he has a 2003 not 2005

I used 880s for years without a problem I would just stick with those. You should be fine plus I think the previous gen uses a different bulb.
