My son has a 98 GTP with tranny woes-125,000 mi. Also appears to have a clogged cat conv. too. Anyhow a local tranny guy after hearing our woes has determined the tranny to be bad and he infact had just finished rebuilding one for a $1900 fee. Too much for me and my son:th_lipssealed1:

My son dropped the pan to find smelly burnt oil, grey sludge. He put a new filter and oil and still has the same problems, whining and slipping.:th_sick2:

I can get a used tranny for $475 that comes with a 60 day warranty. I dont know the mileage yet. I'm pondering doing the replace my self. The local tranny guy- who has a good record of customer service- wants about $350 to do the swap.

How hard is this to do for a backyard mechanic? I'm an old dinosaur Ford guy that used to drag race, so I have worked alot on cars. NEVER on something more modern as I got out of racing in the late '80s. I assume the trans in aluminum. Historically speaking Do I get the converter with the tranny? What can I check while I have the replacement tranny before I put it in. Any switches/selenoids that can be replaced easily before I switch?

Yes you want to use the converter that comes with the replacement tranny, depending ehat blew up in yours, you dont know what kind of debris is floating around in the converter, and dont want it getting into the bad trans. As for the cat converter...I'd just chop it off and put a pipe in there:th_thumb-up:
 
Or if you want I have a cat converter...the whole stock down pipe actually, including the cat. You could bolt it right up as a replacement. PM me if interested.
 
1900.00 is retarted. Dave can do one starting at 1450 for a performance tranny.


You'll need to pull both the engine and tranny. The hardest part is hooking the wires back up. Which is not really that hard at all.

Make sure you take the rear knock sensor wire off. Or else you will pull it out of the plug. It's on the back side of the motor near the freeze plugs.
 
Thanks for the replies! It looks like if I have to pull both then I will have somebody else do it. My garage just isnt equipped- it's awful old...

I figure the $1900 price he gave me included removing and replacing. Still that's a big chunk. In fact it's more than what my kid paid for the car!!
