• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Here's the lowdown....

Mobile 1 synth oil....

It's been 3 months since insertion, and almost the 3000 miles

Half of it's gone

and whats left is damn black...

I cant really tell if i'm leaking anything new since my LIM and VC gaskets were leaking, but now they're both fixed and new, as is the UIM gasket (new as in 8-10 months old)

I'm not burning oil, and there's not a puddle where i park

Should I have the dealer change the filter out and put more mobile in without draining it since the synth lasts longer? or just normal change

(and yes, i could change my oil myself, but 1. it's f'n cold out, 2. i'm lazy and they fill up my washer fluid at the same time)
--------

And at approx 80k miles, car is a '99, Tranny....fluid is a grungy looking red, starting to turn a reddish brown you could say, and doesn't smell very bad

time for filter/shift kit/fluid change?

--------

And anything else i should be inspecting at 80k? Plugs were new NGK55's when top end was rebuilt, and i know i need a new accessory belt, it's missing some rib parts.

--------

And another tranny question...

When in reverse, from a dead stop, giving it a little more than creeping speed gas, not really heavy, it goes CACHUNK! and it feels like the rear drive shaft jumped hit the bottom of the car, if it had a drive shaft....thats the problem, i feel it under my feet. Could tranny mount be dry on the inside? rubber is cracked on it, as is all other rubber under the car like on my suspension, except engine mount, again, new at rebuilt

I would have them do a FULL oil change. get all new fresh oil in the car. make sure everything is clean in the engine bay...check for leaks.

also check your PCV valve. if that is gunked up you will start to use some oil from blow by.

the fact that your oil was black....sounds like blow by. combustion chamber gases getting past the rings....turns the oil black...burnt.

as far as the trans...I would change the fluid...get it flushed out.

when you put it in reverse...sounds like a mount may be gone. they use a hydraulic mounts....my guess is the fluid is gone from the inside. I'd also check your control arms bushings...as they like to wear donw do to age as well.

mmkay....I thought Mobile 1 lasted longer.... :-/

and i'll check the valve when it's warmer out.... >.> I dont feel like tearing into it when it's this f'n cold out

Well you have to understand how a motor oil reacts to such things. But if you have lost half the oil, wherever it may had gone, that means whats left is having to deal with engine temps and lubrication that would normally be carried by a full 4.5 - 5.0quarts. So even a synthetic is going to be stressed under those conditions no matter how good it is.

I dare say that a conventional would have faired far worse as it doesnt deal with such things nearly as well as a synthetic.

Yah :-( Getting it changed tomorrow hopefully....

But where is the oil going...that is the question....

As i said, not burning from what i can see, doesn't look like new oil on the rest of the engine, so is there anywhere else the oil could be going? Maybe headgasket leaking? it has been three months, so if it's leaking a small amount, i probably wouldn't see much if any smoke

check around the oil filter. see if there is residue around it. if there is......my guess is they didnt have the filter on tight enough...PCV needs looked at or. the previous place didnt put all the oil in the car.........just pocketed all your oil.

No, i know the head guy there and stand out in the shop next to my car while they do everything, i watched them take a case of oil and dump it all in

And yes,....hmmm....filter.....i'll check that when there's not a foot of snow on the ground >.<

I hate this weather....Car likes to die....HVTB is great, but giving gas, then letting off for the trac control to set tends to kill it

Well, update time.

It was the switch and the resister, $200 done by dealer

they're dyeing my oil to look for the leak (or maybe not due to)

Hub bearing is loose and going out, $500 from them.

Next up is the big question, do i cut my losses and pony up for a newer GP?

i know this thing has suspension problems like needs new shocks all around, needs a new tranny mount, and all the under car rubber like control arm bushings replaced...

recommendations?

I have very little experience is this matter except that is sounds like our GPs are in the exact same shape. We should just comebine the two and see if we get something that will run more that 15 miles. I love my baby, but on a more serious note, car dealerships are looking high and low for used cars to sell to the public. You might want to try and see what you can haggle out of them. Lemme know what you do, i'll be working on my many fluid leaks all week. ~Tyler.
