This has occurred twice when I was stopped at a stoplight. Foot on the brake and car starts surging almost like I was brake torquing it. At first I thought well maybe I was pressing on the gas pedal with the edge of my boot but the next time I made sure and switched to the left foot on the brake. very weird --any suggestions??

Clean your TB and MAF, really cheap insurance. If it continues, unplug the MAF and drive around like that for a few days and see if the problem persists. I know a bad MAF can cause surging.

Just some easy, cheap stuff to try/investigate before you start talking about more expensive avenues.

could be a vac leak.

get some carb cleaner and spray around the engine at the vac lines and T's, while its running. if the idle jumps up, you found the area thats broken.

Thanks I'll try those out. I know when I was changing my thermostat I accidentally broke a vac line connector on top so that's likely it.

Oh, yeah, I imagine vac leaks are even worse on 97's, since they have that weird vacuum controlled transmission.
