Heating issue

A friend of mine has a 2001 Grand Prix GT with the 3.8 engine in it. It recently has got a couple issues. The tempurtare gage is showing it pegged at 260 and the service engine soon light is on. Recently she also had the temp light come on and then her A/C shut down. I put a new thermostat in it for her then i told her to go to Auto zone to have the service engine soon light reset. It didnt however fix the temp gage. Just yesterday again the engine over heat light came on and the A/C shut down again. Any advice for me/her on it?

Thanks
Andy

first off, have her get it scanned like you told her to.

are the fans working when the a/c is on?

and do the fans come on when the engine gets warm? with out the a/c being on?

sounds like it could be a bad temp sender. it located under the t stat in the manifold. the wires also could be fubared as the exhaust is right there to cook the wires.

the scan will tell you more tho.

I'm with Scott. You want to see what the actual temp is. Is the cooling system low? Since the gauge reads hot and the pcm is shutting down the AC, that usually means the temp sensor is working. This is because there are two elements in it. If one goes back either the pcm or gauge acts up. Usually both don't go bad at the same time.

Ok guys thanks so far with the help and advice....she stopped by O-Reilly tonight and they told her...

02 Heater Circuit
Bank 1 Sensor 2

EGR Valve Stuck
open or Circuit
Performance

Thats what they wrote down on a piece of paper for her.

This help at all?....I hope! lol.

Thanks again for the help so far guys. She has a limited budget and just trying to help her out if possible.

Andy
