hey, new guy here. purchased a 98 gtp recently non running. was supposed to be a good car, but its turning to be a fixer. was told it needed a fuel pump, and thats it. well i determined it did need a fuel pump, so i slapped a walbro i had in it. now it pumped. all over my garage. PO cut all 3 lines at the tank. next problem. it misfires real bad. took it to work and connected my tech2. #3 was a hard misfire. checked plug. pure clean unburnt oil. compression was zero. :(

was told this car ran great, and was fast. with a bunch of mods. only mods are a 3.4 pulley swap, intake, catback, and some sort of chip. where do they put the chips in these? seems i was lied to. lol. well i traded it for a pickup i bought for 200 bux and did some work to. so i still believe i got a good deal.

not sure until i tear it down weather its a bad valve, or a hole in the piston.

so, im going to order all the parts, and a used head. and do it next weekend, and have a decent car. so, i need to know if the heads on a supercharged 3.8 are the same as the N/A 3.8 of the same gen? or would now be a good time to upgrade to like the gen 3 heads? is that even possible?

not to big on the specs of the parts on these cars. just know how to work on them and fix them.

the heads between supercharged and n/a are different. the injectors go directly into the heads on a supercharged engine, and in the lim on an n/a. if you want a new set of heads. i can ship you a set, with valvetrain for 90 plus shipping

but I would tear it down first too see whats wrong.

i'm kinda going towards the fact that it had a 3.4 on there with no exhaust mods and something gave and now you got problems.

lthats why im ordering a piston, rings and bearing for #3 cylinder. and a head. along with all gaskets and seals. and am going to get it done this saturday and sunday. and what ever i do not need, i can send back. i do not want to tear the head off, and have to wait for parts. i just want to get this running quickly. dont worry guys, headers are on that list also along with rocker arms. that should be enough with the 3.4 pulley correct? headers, intake and some kinda chip? probably some ebay resistor deal

yeah, tear the head off and check to make sure your piston is still all there....cuz it might be in pieces

i have a feeling the piston has a nice hole in it. but there is a chance its just a bad valve

could i upgrade to the newer heads? i think i read that somewhere..

my buddy has hp tuners and wants to do the tune. and why do you say no chip? just curious. ive seen a few guys around here(morons) buy universal chips off ebay and wire them into the injectors. i think there just resistors though. they never did any good though

and is the newer head swap worth it? i can get those heads, just not the l67 heads. none of my sources have them

Tbh, just buy a short block at a junkyard. It will be cheaper in the long run. You can't just merely throw a new piston in, otherwise you will have issues. Block needs to be align bored and crap. And there is no "chips" that work like previous stated. Only a correctly tuned PCM is what you are looking at.

The only "chip" that comes off ebay typically is a resistor that goes in line with the IAT to fool the pcm into dumping more fuel. Which..the O2 then adjusts back out once it sees the fueling as pig rich.

Actually, it does not do that. It MAY increase your timing, but even that is unlikely.

If you were to disable the maf sensor and go into VE mode, you would get alot more fuel (like, up to 12-16% extra), and you would not have the o2 sensor pull it back out as closed loop does not function in VE mode. So it is somewhat true in that sense.

Install used engine - done 6hrs of your life.

remove head and/or oil pan - 8/12 hrs of your life. and the possibility of it grenading afterwards. not to mention all the fricken gaskets and new bolts.

yes, the head and rocker bolts must be replaced as they are torque to yield crap.

And if it helps any the oil pan is a PITA to remove with the engina in the car.

yea. ive done plenty of work on these cars. and head and oil pan removal is about 3 to 4 hours. they suck to get the pans off though i agree. but i can get it all apart and together within a day. and im not worried at all about it grenading after its together. im more then well qualified to be doing this work and being confident that its not going to fail

a few light scrapes but not too bad. just a quick hone and a new piston will do the trick. the cars not in the best shape. its verry rusto on the rockers, to the point where there basically gone. going to get it runnning, get some headers and a tune and sell it i think.

how i got this car,.....

I work at a gm dealer. Im a tech. They hire a new guy starts doing oil changes, and a few days after he starts, he's 45 minutes late. says his truck died. i later ask him what he's going to do with it and he said scrap it, the rear end is bad, and i think the motor locked up today. i dont wana look at it. So, we tow it to the shop after hours cuz my buddy buys his brand new cooper stt's,, for 50 bux!!! I start to look at the truck and put a battery in it, and it runs great! throw it on a lift and the pinion is ****ed! its pretty rusty, interior is damn near mint, and the paints not too bad. So we get the tires swapped around, and i call the new guy, as he stayed home, and i offer him 400 bux, he is super excited for 400 bux!!!! call him back a few minutes later, and tell him i can only do 200, and ill bring cash tomorrow. So, i bought thr truck, installed a used diff for 200 bux, deleted leaky oil cooler lines, and cleaned the interior really good, and gave it a quick wash and drove it for a couple months. I advertised it for 3 grand, and the guy with this gtp told me what he had and wanted to trade. i asked whats wrong and he said nothing but the pump. so i drove 5 hours each way to get the car, and deliver my truck.....

then i get home and stat work, and i still think i got a better deal as the truck was really rusty, and had 250k on it. and this car will be an easy sell. all in all, i had about 600 into the truck, and will have about 600 into this car. and i know i can get anywhere from 5 to 6 grand for this car here. from some highschool kid who wants a fast car. then my plan is to buy another in nicer shape cosmetically. but i plan on driving this for atleast a few months if not longer. :)

well, i took a closer look at the car tonight. and i noticed it actually needs 2 pistons! so, another will be ordered tomorrow, and the plan is stil to have thi pistons in some time late friday night/ early saturday morning. going to pull an all nighter, since i work at 8 saturday morning. then put the heads back on after work and driving home that night. we'll see how much **** goes my way, or the normal way lol will take tons of pics.
