I just purchased a 2001 Grand Prix GT and one of the first things I want to replace is the HU, I have the Bose system and HUD. My question is does the stock HU control any of the HUD functions?

This is my first post BTW, I've been lurking about and have found this forum very informative. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
 


I had bose in my car also and put an after market HU in. The only thing is after you put in the after market one you no long can see what track you are on on the HUD. It is sort of tricky installing an after market HU when you have bose. I wound up ditching the stock bose amp and installed a 4 channel amp to run my stock speakers. There are other ways but I found this to be the best. I believe if you just install the after market HU like you normally would the only real problem is that the volume control is more sensitive(if you will). In other words 50% volume now equals 100%, I am just throwing those numbers out there. If you want more help let me know. I did it three different ways before ending up with the way I have it now.
 
I haven't decided how I'm going to go about replacing the HU, I have read there are 3 main ways to do it, cant decide if i want to relocate the stock HU somewhere else, or use the expensive adapter harness that allows the replacement of the HU and still keep my chimes and other features. I can live without the track info on the HUD, as long as everything else on the HUD works fine I'll be happy
 
Everything still works on the HUD except what is associated with the radio, make sense? Also I haven't heard of relocating the HU. How doe this work? One more thing with the little adapter things you can buy, they don't work in grand prix's. You get a lot of "noise" in the speakers. They say you can here engine noise through the speakers. I am really happy with the way I did it, I think it turned out great. I have a friend that has the aftermarket HU just wired into the stock bose harness like you would on any other car without bose and it sounds great but the volume control is so sensitive. But it really isn't a big deal.
 
You can get around the volume issue by wiring the RCA preamp outputs to the speaker leads. It sounds SO MUCH better that way as well.

I know I tried that but I can't remember why I didn't keep it that way. It might have been the sound because I put in aftermarket speakers also.
 


I went and bought the HU I wanted and then bought a nice 4 channel amp. I also removed all the rear speakers and installed a nice set of 6x9's. It was a personal choice because I plan to get rid of all the bose equipment in my car. I then wired in the HU like you normally would. Then wired in the amp to the HU like you normally would. Then in the trunk where the bose amp is I found the wires that go from the bose amp to the speakers and wired those wires to my new amp using the 4 channels of the amp to control the 4 corners of the car. I still have the wireing diagram that tells you which wires are what in the connectors at the bose amp. Also there is a remote wire that goes the the bose amp. I used that wire for the remote on my new amp, I just had to wire it in behind the HU. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I will try to explain it a little better.

But if you plan on leaving the bose speakers in the care I would splice in some RCA's and wire it up that way. I did try it this way but since I was getting rid of the bose amp the way I did it made more sense.

If you do it with the spliced RCA's it is much easier. I just spliced in some RCA ends on to the speaker wires behind the HU and plugged them into the RCA ports on the back of the HU. Either way let me know if you need more help, it has been awhile since I did mine but I will help you the best I can. Hope you found something useful in that mess I just typed :th_scratchhead:
 
Thanks that helped out a lot, i have a pretty good idea of what i need to do to get this working. Do you remember what adapter harness you used to plug the after market HU into the vehicle harness, I really don't want to start cutting my factory harness up. Another Question I have is did you loose RAP and the chimes the way you did it?
 
RAP and other chimes? I guess I don't know what you are talking about. I used the pigtail connector for the HU and a pigtail connector for GM wireing harnesses. This is what I used to plug into the car harness. Not saying you have to get it from there, I just used that as an example.

you have a 99 GP. The 04+ use the class 2 data bus to send the remote signal and chimes to the radio. When you remove the stock radio most(if not all that I know of) aftermarket radios will not communicate with databus and therefor you need a special harness to maintain those features.

I guess I didn't know that but shamb1s has an 01 gp. Plus I am still lost, what chimes are you guys talking about?
 
so what about retained accessory power (turn car off and accessories work until door is opened)? will I loose that when I replace the stock HU, or can that be retained with a special harness as well?
 


the harness for yours should be appropriate for RAP. i know on my 97, there wasnt a RAP feed at the HU, it was controled elsewhere. not quite sure on your year. you'll need to see the wiring diagram for your car's year.... but i thouht at least up through 02 were the same.
 
Eventually all the bose will be gone, but first thing is just getting the HU replaced and some subs added. Thanks for all the help guys, its much appreciated.
