Headers?

Hey everyone,

I'm considering doing a set of headers. Right now, my car is stock. I'm considering headers because to do the F + R powerlog + downpipe from ZZP is about $900 CAD shipped to my door, where as headers would be less than half that. My car's an '03 and has 220k km's (137k mi). To me, the choice is easy, but I'd like to hear opinions from others who've either gone down 1 road and regretted it, or loved it.

if your rich go ahead and hand over your hard owned cash to zzp

or buy speed daddy headers for like 220 usd.

Lol, definitely not rich. I love W-bodies, but if I had actual money, I'd be driving something that's powered by a boosted v8 and RWD.

Speed daddy was the set I was considering, due to their price. Besides their fitment issues and the ****ty gaskets, any downsides to running headers on the L36?

Neither will make any significant difference and are both a waste of money.

By the time you fix the SD headers so they hold up, they aren't as cheap.

I'd stay with stock manifolds and spend your money on something that will actually make a difference in performabce.

why are you putting headers on a l36? why would ya? na engines aint worth the time or money to mod. stick to making it look good.

and you toss their gaskets and re use the metal stock gaskets.

Well, I believe I have an exhaust leak at either the manifold or the downpipe. I have to get under the car to check where it's coming from, but my fear was, if the manifold/downpipe is cracked, why not replace it with something aftermarket and higher performance? So after looking at my options, headers make sense from a price standpoint. That's all.

Also, top swapping could be a thing. I mean, Gen V + manifold's are going cheap now-a-days, so headers would help there too.

bit more then a blower and lim needed for a top swap. but yeah, you could, or you could fix the leak, its likely the stock flex in the down pipe.

na cars also like to clog the cat, so a new cat and dp aint a bad idea.

but if you want to top swap its a hell of a lot easier to install the headers during the top swap, cause the heads are getting changed.

I second doing top swap and headers at the same time. Much more room to work, and you'll notice the gains much more going from stock N/A to Boosted with headers.

Yeah, I'm aware of what's needed for the full top swap. I was also considering an L67/L32 swap, but finding an engine with lower mileage than what my car has now is a bit tough, and people up here in Canuckistan want multiple limbs for a good condition L32, so top swapping was the more practical option.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll hold off on buying headers until I decide if I want to top swap this car. It's just a DD, so maybe I'll just do the DP and tune and call it good.

I did SD headers on an L36 Impala, and I'd say it was worth it. The two caveats were, I tuned it to take advantage of the exhaust flow, and I got the best results running 93 octane.

I'd say if you have to replace an exhaust component anyway, and break all the rusty bolts and go through all the crap involved, headers are worth the small extra hassle.

Thanks for the info. The place I take my car to for work I don't want to do thinks it's the manifold that's cracked, but they aren't sure. They noticed it was louder, just like I did, but didn't look to closely. I'll get them to take a look at it when I have more work for them to do.
