• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Head up kill.

hmmm i put it in second . . . i just assumed that second had more torque . . . idk

I think the lower the gear the more torque. It will depend on how fast the roll is though. If you aren't in the rpm range the motor likes when you press on the gas it will want to find the best gear - that's when it will down shift. Once you are familiar with the best rpm range you can judge. I don't think it will pull good in second if you are only doing a 20 mph roll.

Poil336 has a point. If I stepped down to allow for a downshift the person i'm racing might think I gave it the gas too early. Watch out for those short counts between 2 and 3 also. The guys I used to race counted like this: 1....................................................2.3.

it dosent make a difference if you start with the gear select lever in first or in drive or n e other gear for that matter. the car automotically shifts when it gets close to red line...alteast thats how it is in my 98 gtp it is impossible to over rev it its not like a stick shift car but even then if it is the stock computer they have rev limiters...the gear your in also dosent effect your cars power...it makes certain power and tourqe depending on rpms. the only difference the gear choice would make is in its ratio...also say if you leave it in second and you make a pull from 20 it is going to downsift to first....thats why it is a slush box

No the engine doesn't produce more torque but the gears act as a torque multiplier. My car and many others don't down**** or upshift if they are put in second. Thus, if you put your car in 2nd at a certain speed and you're running 1500 rpm it won't pull as well as if you put it in 1st and it ran 2500 rpm at that speed. 1. the engine will be making more torque at 2500 than 1500. 2. you have the advantage of better gearing to accelerate.

i find that odd that ur car wouldnt downshift at only 1500 rpms if u go wot.....my car will shift into first as long as i am around 30 mph...in fact i can put it into first myself at about 35 mph and get it to downshift.

i have read that it decreases your tansmission line pressure when you select the 1 2 or 3 gears. just leave it in drive when racing or your only hurting yourself and your car

put your car in first and take off, it'll red line in second and stay there. first gear in these cars goes up to about 45 if you go wide open. the amount of torque a car makes depends on the powerband it's set up in, whoever said the gear ratio is like a multiplier is more or less accurate. if a car makes 220ft-lbs of torque at an rpm, it'll make that through all the gears. it'll just be more effective depending on the ratio. and whoever was using the tapshift with the comp-g, i know absolutely nothing about that lol.

i think that about covers it. but ^^^ctk's right, it'll decrease the pressure in the line and the possibility that you'll dick something up is greater

We are talking about two different things. My trans will downshift if I leave it in auto. I have to shift it up or down if I put it in manual mode. This is a tap-shift. The new G8 GTs have the same ability.
I prefer to have the car in the gear I want to start the race in and the engine running at the rpms where it will put out the most power.

It's mostly a matter of preference. I like to control the engine/gears. I dont like to "shift". I tried a BMW M3 with the sequential manual gearbox. It's a manual that has no clutch peddle and electronically does that for you. I loved it for racing but hated it for normal driving. It had an auto mode but felt like someone who wasn't used to a manual was shifting for you.

I'm running a shift kit and a PCM with increased trans pressure. Off the line I go in auto, from a roll I go manual and select the gear if I have a chance.

WTF does this have to do with a GP?

On this site, what doesn't?

Was "humorously" making a point that autos are only superior for drag racing. Seeing as how serious everyone takes their cars on here, perhaps I'll try to keep my comments/suggestions to myself. After all this is super serious business and all.

Who am I trying to kid? I love making you all a bit angry with objectiveness and sound reasoning.

Sorry for the thread detour.

well the 20% hp loss in an auto tranny is the reason why people choose a manual tranny for racing, you just gotta be a good driver and shift fast enough for a good run on a drag

i am a big fan of manual transmissions because i feel it makes you a more competent drive and you are more connected to the car...i just think it is more fun imo...however in todays would with dual clutch autos...and even new slushboxes...the idea of a stick giving a slight edge because not as much power loss is not necessarily true...especially if you are talking about performance cars. i pick stick for my fun car to go out and drive just for fun...but would probably go with auto if it is my daily driver where comfort and ease of use is usually key.
