Head unit upgrade

My sons '04 GT1 has the base single CD stereo. Would like to have a cassette deck for an iPod adapter. I think I saw that the Monsoon head unit has a cassette deck. Can I pick up a Monsoon head unit and plug it into the existing harness and expect it all to work? I mean after the dealer charge for programming it.

You'll just have to have the dealer unlock the radio in order to use the Monsoon system but there isn't a cassette option with it just the 6 disk

With how much you pay for that deck why not just pay for an aftermarket deck with iPod or aux hookup?

you cant put a monsoon in a car with a base stereo.

but you can add aux input port to the factory radio. How you can add an aux input/mp3 player without an adapter - LS1TECH i put this aux port in my regal, and another member did it to his GP. cost me 5 bucks, if you have solder iron, solder and shrink tubes already. got the wire at home depot, they sell it by the foot, 3 feet was 90 cents, the aux poet was $3 iirc. the part number listed still works. just hand the guy at the counter for the part #, you'll never find it on your own lol

you can tap the cd player, or the tape deck. or the radio. page 25 talks about it i think, up or down a page maybe. one guy did it.

my cd player was a thin ribbon, so i went and tapped the tape deck.

Well I bought a Kenwood receiver, GMOS01, and all the mounting hardware from Crutchfield last night. I was considering the home brew auxiliary jack but the stock radio needs replacing anyway. All of the top buttons are worn out and a bulb is burned out on the display. The install on the new radio will go easy. I have installed a few stereos in my time. My son is happy

change the speakers too, the stock ones suck at best. and they are 9 years old now.

i just changed mine, and added a sub and amp. to the stock head unit, the difference is night and day, the radio is twice as loud with out the sub hooked up. just from the new speakers.

did you also get the harness to retain the steering wheel controls? it keeps the the door chimes and stuff working. i dont have a GP i drive a regal, but have heard of the dic not working right with a after market radio.

maybe someone will chime in on that if it affects your year or not.

The car is a GT1 so no steering wheel controls. I have read that the only drawback to using the GMOS01 is that the date doesn't display in the DIC. But all other DIC functions work. Not spending a ton on this system. It is for my 17 year old son so if he wants more than that he can fund it. I am just helping him to get his iPod working in the car.

Oh and I made an error. The head unit is a Pioneer not a Kenwood. This install should be the easiest I have ever done. I am also swapping the factory 6 cd head unit in my '08 Cadillac DTS to a factory nav unit. Now that one is going to test my patience.

I've done this procedure on a GM radio with a tape player before, and actually did it all on my own by figuring out which wires had the sound and wiring them to a switching jack. My question is, if you do that to a CD player, won't the sound stop (even if coming from an amp3 player) after the CD ends? A tape player mod was easy because I put a fake tape in that never ended lol

a cd never ends, they just start over. lol for the tape deck yes it will run out of tape. ive got a xm tape deck line is, so i let that roll, as it will go forever with out stopping to flip sides.

the aux port in the post. just jumps the signal so the radio never knows. as long as the tape or cd is in and on.

in that post a guy did tap the radio wires, 4 and 6 or some crap, and he said it worked. page 24 iirc.

Stereo arrived yesterday. I did the interface wiring in my kitchen last night so the install today would be simple. I had my son do the work while I told him what to do. Easy easy install. The Pioneer head unit works great and looks pretty good in there. Matt is happy and it didn't break the bank doing it.

Oh and just in case anyone wants to know the GMOS-01 has two red wires. The install sheet only mentions one. Either one will work as intended. But I opted for the one by the orange wire. Tape off the second red wire
