Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Has anyone used the PAC RP5 GM11 adapter harness?

For my setup, I use the PAC SWI-X. Works with the remotes IR.

Also my car is a 97 and the HU is a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X996.

EDIT: 996 instead of 995

04+ have a serial connection to the radio and it affects a lot of things, read up on it it's covered several times on these pages.

So how is the PAC-SWI-x different from a PAC SWI-JACK. I installed the SWI-JACK in my 06 GP and never had any issues at all. I believe the SWI-X is an adapter that has its own LED transmitter that is mounted somewhere in the vehicle that can be seen by the HU and then your steering wheel controls act as an IR remote. So with that being said the HU you install has to be wireless remote controllable. Am I correct in this scenario? Sorry to hijack the thread OP.

Exactly. In a nutshell, it turns your steering wheel controls into a remote for the radio. It is a very universal adapter this way. The catch is mounting the IR blaster.

Please explain.
That adapter only provides functions to the steering wheel controls, you would still need to buy an adapter to use the stereo and retain your door chimes and Onstar functionality as well. So without the proper adapter you would not have a functioning radio. And why buy 2 separate adapters when you could just buy the one?

^^Is that the major difference on this topic between 97-03 and the 04+ cars?

I still have the chimes. Don't know about onstar as my car predates it.

Yes chimes are tied in through the radios amplifier, there's also no ignition hot (yellow) since the radio gets a serial input to turn on and off. It also sends data to the HUD to display info there as well. Every option I have seen hasn't retained everything. You either have missing date (even with remote installation of factory radio in trunk and under the dash) weird/ dead gauges. Steering wheel controls that kinda work, and other small issues. Up to 03 were cake I used to install those without having the car handy. Crimp on a harness slam it a kit and remove old install new. These 04+ are picky.

Does no one like there stock deck? ( nav here) I understand but why go through so many frustrations for what? a sd slot? aux input? way cheaper to make one of these and patch it in then it is to deal with all the head ache. To top it off what is the real point? your never physically powering the speakers from the deck and sound quality is degraded because you have a now high input going into a low input. sound quality guys.

Well my stock deck had a cassette player as well as the cd player. So yeah. Tired of looking at that ****.

Stock deck went bye bye a long time ago, I much rather have aftermarket pioneer DD of course we that usually comes replacing all the stock speakers etc

I swapped for the hands free calling (can answer calls through the steering wheel controls), ipod interface, bluetooth audio, HD radio, and also having a working display.

Ewwww tape deck. If I didn't have this nav it would of been the first thing to get changed. Ive since worked around it and actually really impressed with my results.

Check and see if your cruise control is working or not. If it isn't, it's the gmos-01 unit slowly failing. Another sign is the chimes take longer to turn off or it starts sounding like a submarine chime.

My cruise works fine (except for when all my gauges shut off it disengages then) but i have no chimes what so ever. And actually, it hasn't shut all my gauges of for like 3-4 days so idk what to think.

Reading all of this tells me I should stick with a stock HU replacement.
For the 01? You shouldn't even care about this thread if you have an 01. If your car has Bose, there is a connector with 4 wires on it that will not go into the harness adapter, one of those wires is pinkish/salmonish in color, connect the remote turn on lead to this wire and no need for the special adapter.

So after all this, it still seems that the PAC RP5 GM11 is the best way to go when replacing the HU? I have one coming in tomorrow and will be doing the install this weekend, we'll see what happens.
