Hard to steer driving slow

Hey guys, I noticed a couple weeks ago it was hard to turn the wheel while backing out of the garage. I thought it was because I was turning the wheel sharp while going very slow. Today I installed an aftermarket stereo and noticed all this leaking on the steering column. Any ideas on what I need to fix?

Pull the cover up. It just hooks together. Kind of looks like someone had greasy fingers and was messing around with it. Check your P/S fluid yet?

My power steering fluid is full I just checked it. Sorry the pics aren’t much help I’ll take it all the way apart tomorrow. To me I looks like its leaking behind that yellow dot in the second pic and in the far right where there is a vertical crack where the two pieces meet? When I’m driving faster than 2 or 3mph it steers normally.

there is absolutely no fluid up in the column.

your abs light on? magna steer takes a crap when the abs light is on.

Nope, abs light is not on. Any ideas why it looks like its leaking from the inside out through every single screw hole, button hole and crack on the whole column? It’s never been taken apart before today. I just took the dash apart for the first time to install the radio and noticed it before I popped the dash cover off. I bought it from my Mom yesterday and she bought it brand new in 2002.

not a clue, but i know for a fact theres no fluids of any kind in the column, p/s fluid is no where near the inside of the car either.

maybe she spills drinks?

Nah, I know for a fact she doesn’t eat in the car and she doesn’t go through fast food. She’s the type of person who keeps a note pad in her door and writes the price, gallons, date and resets the trip miles every time she fills up (to the decimal). I know because she gave me the notebook with the car lol. Yep…she has ocd tendencies

what grease? its bone dry in there. ive taken them apart and out of the car, theres nothing but metal and plastic and wires.

So no fluid/grease could possible be coming from the inside of the column? It has to be coming from outside then?

like i said, its dry inside, no idea wtf is going on there, and its on the top and bottom of the plastic seam. maybe the plastic is messed up and not oiled up?

or someone sprayed lube in there for who knows why?

Thanks, I'll take the covers off tomorrow and clean them real good with dish soap and put them back. I guess I'll try not to worry about it unless it comes back.

I took the covers off and found a few grease dabs directly behind the wheel. I wiped them up, hope it wont happen again.

My car did the same thing, even my truck did.

Some sort of oils mix with some moisture and come out at the seams, it will likely come back. It's not like it's actually leaking anything.

Mine is hard to steer when it's cold. I'm sure my rack is on its way out. I have to top off the PS fluid every now and then.

thats some long life grease, the one i took a part hardly had any grease to be seen, just some hard black crap here and there.
