Hard out of first gear

1999 Grand Prix GT 3.8 not supercharged with 180,000 miles. Ses light is not on. And i just changed the tranny fluid like a month ago... it was pretty much black. But anyway, theres the back ground. Tranny is shifting hard going from first to second. but only if it shifts while im going slow and it gets a chance to shift at about 3000 rpms.. if i put my foot down and it gets over 3000 before shifting it will typically shifts fine. Just wondering if someone could give me a solid guess on what it could be and how much it might cost

Sounds like the pressure is jacked up and limping you. There's a ton of varous reasons for this.

Take a friend for a drive and get the condition to happen. Leave the friend in the running car and head into somewhere to get the car scanned. Don't turn it off or the code could potentially reset.

He said light isnt on

A lack of a light doesn't mean there isn't a code stored. Many trans codes don't turn on the light. It's all in the programming of the pcm as to which stuff turns on lights etc. That's why I'm suggesting a scan. Most likely there is a stored code that won't turn on the light, but it may be an ignition resetting code. By getting it to shift hard and not turning off the igntion before getting it scanned, he has the best possibility of finding a code to read and help diagnose.

Hard shifts, you didn't turn it off and no code? I expected a pcs/epc to toss a code of P1811.

Hmmm well when was the last service? Maybe hit it with a pan drop, filter change and add a quart of lucas to the refill.

On the fluids/spray wall of the parts you'll find a white bottle with blue cap called Lucas Transmission Stop Slip.

It's about the closest thing to magic in a bottle for our cars. Not saying it's perfect or the cure for our trans ills. It's good though.
