Hard Braking Swerve - To the Shoulder

I've done/been in the car when my dad does it. Whenever your towing a boat its a lot harder to stop quickly... shoulder is definitely a better option than hitting a car in front of you and i'm sure the person behind appreciates it unless they want an out drive sticking through their windshield.

I'll swerve.

1) If I don't have enough time to stop (such as ABS preventing a stop)
2) Because it keeps you from getting rear-ended by the idiot behind you who isn't paying attention.

Like a poster said above, I bet you're the guy who leaves 1/8 mile between you and the car in front of you... at a stop light.

It really comes down to understanding your vehicle's (and your own) capabilities, and being honest about them... ie not letting your ego drive for you.

If you have to swerve to avoid an accident, you were going too fast or following too close for you and your vehicle to safely come to a stop in time.

I also doubt accidents teach tailgaters to change their habits. People who are set in their ways always find a way to blame the situation or others instead of their actions. This is where we come back to ego. Everyone likes to pretend they are a great driver and blame an outside factor for bad habits.

i drive roll off trucks. cant tell you how many times ive had to make some seriously evasive moves to avoid assholes. the shoulder can be your best friend really.

people seem to think you can stop as fast as a car. we cant.

People Drive to slow and i have to prove to them they are. They tend to GTFO when they see me coming at them like a bat out of hell. Or if you fail to use your directional then yea your ass is getting one pissed off driver attached to it.

A hard brake swerve to the shoulder once saved my cousin and I from getting rear ended.

Long story short, we top a hill and traffic is stopped just on the other side of the crest. My cousin stomped the brakes to get stopped and once stopped we still hear tire squealing and see a Dodge Ram sliding beside us on the shoulder with all four tires locked. Had he not went to the shoulder we would have been in bad shape.

No one was driving like a jackass, or following too close, it was just a situation made bad by placement of a stoplight.
