GTP Trans Problem

Hey Guys, I'm hoping you guys cans shed some light on this. I'm looking to trade my bike for a 99 GTP with a 131,000 on it. The kid who owns it said he thinks it might need a torque converter because the car shifts through all gears when its cold but as soon as the car warms up it loses all gears. I was wondering if any of you experienced this before or had any insight as to what could be causing this. Any input would be welcomed.

The first thing that should be checked is the fluid level in the transmission. This needs to be checked with the engine running, shifter in park, and preferrably warmed up. It should be to the Full mark and no less than the Fill mark. If the level looks ok then likely there is a lot of debris in the fluid and filter and after driving a short while the filter can become restrictive enough to cause pressure loss which causes it to lose gears and stop moving until it is shut off and sits for a while. Dropping the lower pan is the best way to check for this and even if it doesnt look bad you can remove the filter and cut it open and inspect the dacron filter material to see if there is a lot of debris in it. It is folded in half so you will need to open it up once removed as that is where all the particles get collected. If it looks bad then replacing the filter may get it working for a short period of time but the problem will return as the debris came from something coming apart and is often because of a torque converter clutch that is damaged.
