GTP took a crap!!

I was on my way home and the GTP just shut down and lucky I coasted to my house.

No noise, just a loss of power and then it shut off.

Any ideas? I got a feeling it is my fuel pump or something.

What does a new fuel pump cost installed from a shop?

Damn it is always something.

Are you sure its the fuel pump? Will it start back up? A Crankshaft Position Sensor will sometimes cause the car to shut down as well. You said a loss of power and then it shut off. I dunno, Ive never known a fuel pump to just go bad like that.

it could be a fuel pump, cause my gt did the same thing one day. It lost power and shut off and i couldnt get it to run, it wanted to turn over but it couldnt start up. I bought a used fuel pump for it for 90 bucks.

As Tyro stated, if you have a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up the the Schradder valve and see if you have pressure there. If so, then check for spark at the #1 cylinder. If you have no spark, good chance its the CPS.

Thanks guys, I do not have a fuel pressure gauge to check. How much should a new fuel pump cost installed?

it shouldnt cost too much, do you want brand new or used ? and all they have to do is drop the fuel tank.

what world are you living in???

there's a nifty access door right behind the center fold down in the rear seat to access the pump

dont make things so hard! :)

new pump/sender assembly is gonna set you back a few hundred, plus labor.

No ****. That what makes our cars so nice. You pull up the carpet and theres the access hole right behind the pass through door. You can do this your self and save alot of money you know. :D Go buy a Chilton's manual and get after it. Just my $0.02.

dont rule out the MAF sensor. see if it will start without it plugged in. if it does.....you found the culprit.

Well it was the fuel pump and sending unit, they are also going to replace the fuel filter. They are charging $600 which it high I think, but I had to have it towed there so I am kind of stuck. At least they can it it fixed today and I have a tax refund coming.

Oh crap dude, where are you located? Is the car already there? If not let us know where you are, maybe we can rally the local guys to help out and then you'd only be out the cost of the pump and maybe a few drinks or a lunch or something.

I hate to see you spend that much. Let us know where you are at so we can see what if anything can be done.

Please, if you have not already taken the car there, look to buying the fuel pump and having the local guys help you get it in there. This is what a community does and one of the purposes it exists for.

I'll be back in a bit with some more info.

Okay, you dont have any garage info filled out *hint hint* so I dont know what model year you have. So I'll make some assumptions

Here is a link to a fuel pump replacement:
Stock Style fuel pump w/ venturi

Read the notes. If you are 2001+ model year you'll need the 97-00 canister which I could not find on their site. But Im sure if you call or email them they will help you out.

Here is a link to your local chapter. We here HIGHLY encourage members to participate in the local chapters and to be as involved on that level as they are here.
Illinois Grand Prix Club (Powered by Invision Power Board)

Now, if you can get the pump and the canister ($100 + canister is a TON cheaper than $600) and perhaps you could take that tax return and spend it in better places, yes? I know it means time without your car until you get the pump and get the people together to help out but if you can do it, start the process.

Im personally calling out to the Illinois Grand Prix club and asking if there are any members in this club that see this message that can commit to helping this community member out if he can come through with the pump? If you can, please post up so we know who can help.

Dizave, if this is the route you want to go, please let us know. I'll do what I can and rally the information and people that I can but I also need to know what you can do.

Okay Dizave, I have made the call to the local people for you so all we need to know is what you can do and what direction you take. I have faith that the community will respond if you decide to buy the fuel pump instead of taking it to the shop or dealership.

Scotty I appreciate the info but it has already been fixed. I just dont have the time to mess with this stuff these days and I just had the shop take care of it. It is a 2000 GTP by the way and they used a Delphi pump that is supposed to be very reliable. It carrys a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty. I am just glad to have gotten the car back today.
