GTP stalls when shifted into reverse

The past couple of days I have noticed when I put my car into reverse the idle bogs down and can stall unless I press the accelerator. It's fine in all other gears, reverse is the only one. A mechanic I know tighten up the idle cable on the throttle and that resolved some of the issue but it still bogs down. Any idea on what is going on? There is no grinding of gears when I shift and fluid levels are good.
 


I also noticed that there is a heavy smell of fuel when shifting into reverse and driving off, I think that's the computer compensating for the low idle to raise the RPMs though.
