GTP shakes between 40-60mph

I'm working on my neighbors 2000 GTP She just had new struts, shocks, tires and an alignment done at a shop. Before that I replaced her swaybar/ bushings and lower control arm bushings.

She has had a shake for a while but it seems to have gotten worse. I had her replace the front tires because they were cracking between the tread and the tread started to separate. So she had the shocks and struts replace because she had a lifetime warranty on them.

The car has 206k on it and the brakes are fine the shake only happens when accelerating between 40-60 mph and it doesn't matter what gear you are in. When you are going 65 mph I can't feel it and at 70 mph it no longer shakes.

If you need more information that I didn't post just ask. I would like to get this out of my garage so I can start working on my stuff again.

Thanks
Phil

cv shafts did that for me re balance the tires numerous times, but only went away when the passenger side shaft was replaced hope that helps

I replaced her passenger shaft 2-3 years ago just picked up a driverside shaft. I'm going to inspect the ball joints and tie rods while I'm at it. They should be good because the shop wouldn't have done an alignment if they were bad.

I'll check the hubs and put the new shaft in the driverside.

if you haven't replaced the driver side axle yet, i'm betting that's the problem. let us know how it turns out.

when my axles went bad (both at the same time because i had it worked on; when they got "disturbed" they broke) it felt like i had no tires on the car the shaking was so bad. it just hopped up and down the road when accelerating. cruising it did okay.

Axle did it the boot wasn't ripped but it had no grease in it. Someone might have put a new boot on it at one point but did not grease it I don't know.

Thanks for your help

How do you tell which axle is bad? I have these exact same symptoms, right down to about the same speeds. Almost new tires, recently balanced, brand new timken front wheel bearings on both sides, and this annoying vibration that shakes the car but is not really felt in the steering wheel. I am suspecting the passenger side axle, but from searching it seems the driver side is the more common problem. How do you actually check them so I know rather than just taking a guess with my ever-thinning wallet?

Well grab your axles and pull on them and check for play, check the boots for tears and if any grease has leaked out or busted.

But I've never heard of the "common side" for an axle, both of mine were bad lol.

Did you check your motor mounts as well? Motor and tranny mount on the bottom. If they're bad they'll cause a vibration as well. But that feels more like a out of balance wheel whereas the axles feels like something rotational hopping.

But yeah, if it's not a wheel/tire problem, my bet goes between axles or mounts. Check mounts first they're cheaper and easier.

You are not talking the dogbones then, right? How do you check the mounts--can you just pull on the motor and see if it moves or do you need to get under it and jack it up and see if the mount moves?

no. not the dog bones. most of the time those are decent. i have seen some that were WORN slap out and they were just squished so it was probably a lot of engine play and maybe some vibration at idle.

but there are two on the bottom, driver side and passenger side, behind the wheel and behind the splash shield. they are hydraulic and filled with fluid and can bust. so search for grease initially. also, with my tranny mount, mine was squished and the rubber on the based of the metal was cracked and what not.

So I got down there and the RF inner had a little play in it, so I changed that axle. The vibration is better, but not gone. I did notice fluid leaking from the mounts, so I suppose those are next...
