This is a '97. I have some welding to do, I want to unplug the PCM. Anything else I should unplug? I plan on unpluging the engine control module, the ignition module and disconnect the battery.
 


OK but I really need to know where these things are located. Im very fimiliar with H body and not so much with W body and not this car. It is my daughters.

BCM - brake control module ?
EBCM ?
 
Ignition control module is under the coil packs.
PCM is in the bottom of the air box.
BCM (body control module) is above the parking brake (well, it is on my Impala).
EBCM (electronic brake control module) is attached to the ABS modulator, in the vicinity of the driver side strut tower.
 
You should be fine if you disconnect the ground on the batter, then none of the current from the welder can travel threw the chassis to the electronics.
 


You can still get continuity through the alternator->block->chassis ground route.

Depends on what kind of welding. If it's tig, I would be disconnecting everything electronic, including the battery.

I was looking at that yesterday, thinking it might be the PCM because its about the same size as the old OBDI. Im wondering how to pull it out of there to get better access to the plugs, its tight, there are other units under there as well ???

OK, Thanks!... I agree, I'd rather unplug these things due to what I've heard called "stray voltage". I screwed up the ign. module on my old Cierra welding the exhaust. I dont want to take chances with this more complicated, expensive, advanced system. I'm mig welding a few patched by strut towers and new rocker panels, a few other spots as well. PITA... but its a great sound car otherwise.

It says right in this post ^ (my last post) and what Im welding on doesnt matter, only that I am welding. Everything goes to ground and welding sends X amount of amperage to ground. From what I found today by asking various mechanics and bodymen I know the only thing that needs be unpluged is the battery.
