GT vs GTP Performance Differences

I had a question about the GTP's overall performance compared
to the GT. I have an 02 GT I'm interested in trading on an
97 to 03 GTP with around 100,000 miles. I talked to a guy in
a parking lot with an early 2000s impala ss with the 3.8S, and
he said his car pulled strongly up to about 90 mph, and then it
was out of steam. I've noticed the same performance characteristic
with all the 3.8 NA's I've driven. I'm wondering if the supercharger
and the 40hp is truly a noticeable jump in acceleration and feel under
full throttle.

Also, I see SE/GTs on the road very frequently, but not the GTPs
as often. To draw a broad comparison, you can find alot of used late
model American muscle cars that were babied by older men/retirees, and
female drivers, but EVO/STI/SRT4s are bought for very specific purposes,
and the type of mods/prematurely burnt clutches you find on them are
reflective of that. The GT is usually driven for mundane purposes, but
was the GTP a car that was bought to stomp all over all day long? Also,
what type of maintainance and repairs are found above and beyond a
3.8 NA? Is there anything in particular I should look for/avoid? I've always
had an interest in getting a 3.8S, but I don't wanna get into repairs over
my head. I appreciate all your responses and thank you in advance.

well me personally, i owned a GT, and i traded it in on a GTP. i LOVE the difference. like, the GT i felt like had to work as a DD. the GTP is much quicker and feels like it just tackles DD like a breeze.

plus, you can make MORE boost with teh mods. GTs are limited in that field.

most will recommend top swap for more compression, im lazy and dont like scrapping for parts, so i opted for newer cleaner better car :)

good luck!

i own both a gt and gtp.

yea the gtp pulls way harder then the gt. stock for stock,

but i feel like you have to give the gtp more gas to get it up to speed, because it only has 2.93s vs gts 3.29s.

gtps whine of the blower is a plus

I had a 06 n/a and also have a 98 GS (same as GTP). My car is mucho faster that my 06 ever was. Its all about the boost man.

the GTPs are going to be faster that the GTs. rated for 40 hp >. but with the blower on there you have more potential for modding it. you can make a GTP fairly quick for cheap. in order for the same performance out of a gt youd prolly be looking into some type of forced induction, depending on how fast you want to go. the most common being the top swap. with a top swap ( gtp top end on Gt lower end) youre running a higher compression that a GTP, making the TS'ed GT faster... but also more problematic and prone to detonation

they arent like imprezas, evos, or srt-4s. those cars are (practicly) always beat on. GTPs on the other hand are owned by a broader spectrum of people. you could find one that has been beat to absolute dust by the highschool kid who thinks its a race car. on the other hand however you could find just as many that are owned by old ladys that drive it once a week never bring it over 3 grand and have all service done by the dealer on time.

hope this helps, good luck

gtp has a blower and beefier trans thats about it other than that all the suspension and handling is the same stock for stock the gtp is 0.8-1.0 seconds quicker to 60 the gtp was suppose to be like the all out version of the gt but then it became its own sub model

haha is it?

this guy that has a stock gt, (who always has to race anyone and everyone) there was dyno shootout and he only made 154 for his best.

Thanks for the info, it definitely does seem like the GTP is
worth getting into. Lol by coincidence last night a guy in a
early 90s GTP coupe pulled up, blue headlights, loud exhaust,
and a great mullet going on. Even though my cars NA, I still
figured I could pull on it because I had 12-15 yrs on his car
and I don't know what they did for the GTPS in the early 90s.
When we hit it, to my surprise, he stayed with me and gained
about half a car length before he shut it down.

DOHC all the way! my DOHC will (well before my trany just started acting up) could beat some 3800 SC cars! a gear swap, intake & TB porting, and some crazy tuning put some massive gains down. that being said...

if i had another car i would consider rebuilding my DOHC and doing a turbo with a newer 4t65 trany. but money isnt in my favor so after 220,000 miles of DOHC my Z is getting a top swapped l36 and new trany. out of the box it will be as fast as mine is now, if not better and have better mpg. add to that my list of mods going in to it and she will be a sleeper that nobody is going to expect. there is a highly mod'd Mazda 3 Speed running around in my area that has a bunch of work done. that thing is quick. stock they are good for 14.1 in the 1/4 so im thinking he might be in the mid 13's with what im planning i am shooting for low 13's to 13 flat in daily driving form and a dip into the 12's with race gas, a smaller pulley and my system and tools taken out.

As for the OP i would say keep your GT and do a top swap on it. the trany you have has a better gear ratio the GTP's 2.92 will help on the high way but i think the 3.29's are better around town. as for the difference between the two trany's 4t65e and 4t65eHD the diff is all in the "Diff" Differential that is. the HD has a bigger and stronger diff. i honestly dont think the HD diff is needed unless you plan on doing burnouts and beating on it. that being said i have a friend who put an M90 SC on his DOHC (might have seen the pics of it sticking thru the roof of the car...) he had his non HD 4t65e Diff last 3 years of running at the drag strip and doing burn outs. 3years was the limit though... as the diff went boom... with pieces flying and fluid on the ground.
