Grinding Noise

This started last week or so. As I am driving I hear this metal on metal sound. I have been driving around listening to it and I have not been able to determine what seems to cause the noise to start.

It will happen most often when I get back on the gas, but not all the time probably around 60% of the time. It will happen at just about any time except when I am cruising down the road at a steady speed.

The noise doesn't stick around long as it comes and goes frequently. it happens often, but in short duration. It is not very loud as I cannot heat it with my windows up.

Any ideas as to what is causing the problem and how to fix it?

Well from the limited description first thoughts are it's either brake related or maybe a wheel bearing starting to crap out.

Where is it coming from?

Thanks for the response, but I already figured out the problem.

The noise was hard to track down, but after checking everything around the wheels, I decided to look under the hood. Took off the serpentine belt, and the noise went away. Turned out to be my A/C compressor trying to go out with a bang. I guess I am going to have to replace it after all.

Probably the AC clutch, I bet the noise goes away when you turn the AC on, and comes back when you turn it off.

A/C Hasn't held freon in years. The pulley is making the noise and has some play in it.

Good news is that this is forcing me to finally fix this side of the A/C. I will fix the blend door later.
