Grand Prix stalls while driving

My car randomly shuts off when driving. No sputtering, just instantly kills as if you were to just turn the key to OFF. I go to start it back up, and it just cranks and cranks and cranks. But if I wait about 15 seconds, it fires up right away. Then 10 minutes later it kills again. Seems like the 2nd time it dies, I start it back up after 15 seconds, go to drive away and it kills for a 3rd time. I get it started again and it will be good for another 10-15 minutes. When looking at a scan of the car when it is about to shut off, the first thing that gets disabled is the Injector pulse width, then the car officially kills and the rpms go to zero. BTW this 2002 grand prix gt has an L32 engine in place.

I ended up driving the car for about 20 minutes today with no troubles at all. So hopefully it throws a code tomorrow. I'll have my scanner ready to go when it and if it does.

Yup...mine didnt set off the CEL, but when I scanned it, it showed a CKP sensor fault. Another vote for the Crank pos sensor.

This is one case where a scanner probably won’t help you. When you lose the CPS signal the car thinks it’s off, and the PCM doesn’t record codes when the car is “off”.

But hey you never know, at least your going to scan. People on here often think scanning their car will give it cuties or something.:th_shakinghead1:

Just take that leap of faith buddy, it is your CPS. Maybe :th_jester:

yes there is a write up...while it may look kind of hard....it's actually rather easy....took me like an hour and a half first time with having no clue what i was doing. I bet i could do it in 45 minutes now.

When you guys say CPS, do you mean the Crank Position sensor? CPS is the cam position sensor. CKPS is the crank. If you mean Crank Position sensor, I say another vote for it. My car was shutting off randomly and wouldn't let me start back up no matter what for at least a minute. I took the harmonic balancer off and checked the CKPS. It had some metal shavings between the teeth. I cleaned it with brake parts cleaner and wiped it down. Didn't have the problem afterwards. Worth a shot before replacing the sensor. You'll need an impact with good power and possibly a puller to remove the harmonic ballancer. I think I used M6x70 or M6x80 bolts with the puller. Just have to remove the plastic splash guard and the front passenger tire to access it.

alright drove the car around tonight and the problem is still there. Luckily my SES light lit up. Pulled over immediately and scanned the code. PO101 is what I pulled.

P0101 Mass or Volume Air flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem

Replacing the crank sensor did not help. I replaced it twice and it didnt help the random stalls. I figured out the PO101 was triggering the pcm to shut off, so i set the PO101 code to "no error reported" on my hptuners and the car never stalled again
