grand prix GT sedan issues

420pontiac

New member
Hello everyone im new to this forum, i just bought a 97 Grand Prix GT sedan, its got a few problems like bad motor mounts, leaking valve covers, ABS light on, and sometimes the "low Coolant" goes on for about 5-8 mins then its gone..i noticed my electric fans wont turn on when engine is on, i actually never seen it turn on by thier own, i have to turn on the heater with the dial set at 1 with a fan pictured next to it for it to stay cool. i heard that these cars were programmed to turn on at about 220 or so? is my pontiac overheating ? the most it rose was about one notch below the 210 mark . any help is greatly appreciated I'm new to pontiacs and FWD.
-thanks

Sounds like it probably isn't getting hot enough to kick on teh fans. i know it's painful to do ..but if you don't have a scanner to see what the pcm thinks the temp is.. take it out and let it get warmed right up. 240F is pretty warm in our minds..but according to GM that programmed them on low speed at 216F and high speed of 228F with kinda questionable interior gauge. It might not be getting hot enough.

Do the fans come on when you turn the AC on?

nah i dont have a scanner, they do turn on i usually just turn it up to 1, this morning driving to work the pin was at 200F i parked it, and it was gushing out coolant from the resevoir tank right from the little hole it has under the cap that doesn't seem normal to me its the second time it does this and always around 200F. how can i fix this issue ?

Ok..this gives me a further idea. Have your radiator cap pressure tested or pick up a new one. Sounds like it's not holding the correct pressure if it's gushing like that. Unless you overfilled the coolant tank.

I assume it gushed when you turned the engine off?

ok, i will go out and buy a new one. At first it did gush out beacuse i filled it up to the limit and a bit more, but the second time it was below the limit, thats when it had me thinking like what the hell ?! and yes it was when the engine was off, right at the 210-200F range. I want to keep driving it with the current coolant level, but now its up to 1/4 of the way.......i clipped some pictures of the coolant levels
*its not gushing out thru the cap, the resevior neck under the cap has a hole that wasn't hand made, thats where the coolant gushes out, hope i make sense.
