GP 1993 turn signal replacement

Hi, I have a 1993 GP with 3.1. My turn signal switch recently started smoking and not working reliably. I need to replace it. I have bought the new switch and need some helps with the steps involved. I do not have an airbag. I do have radio controls in the steering hub. Do I need to remove the steering wheel? Any guidance would be welcome. Thanks in advance for any help.

if its anything like a 97 up, no you dont need to remove the wheel, but it can sure help free up some space, not hard to remove really, you will need a 2 or 3 jaw puller tho.

radio controls are in the clock spring, so the turn signal switch is separate.
 
I just did mine on the 90 and the 93 is the same. You do need to remove the steering wheel and the turn signal switch is behind it. Since you have swrc make sure you have the turn signal switch with them or it won't work. Also, be very careful when you thread the bolts in for the steering wheel puller as the cancel cam assembly is literally right behind the wheel. 89 - 93s use an light emitter type system rather than a clockspring. Those started in 94.
 
Thankyou Mitch R. Yes I discovered I needed to remove the steering wheel and did so with no problem. And yes as it turns out the replacement switch was not suitable for swrc. So I took the existing switch apart (while still mounted on the steering column) and discovered grease all over the copper 'tracks' in the heart of the switch. These copper tracks formed the connections for the signal when the turn signal is operated. I reasoned, rightly or wrongly that this was some conductive grease and was possibly the source of my smoking switch condition since grease was smeared between the copper tracks and causing an electrical short condition. So I carefully cleaned away all the grease, put the switch back together, put the steering wheel back on and tested it. So far, so good I tested the turn signal still works and as of yet without smoking. I realize I may regret this decision because my theory about the conductive grease is all wrong but at least I thought I could buy time until I get the correct replacement swrc turn signal switch.
As I said so far, so good because I have not extensively tested the 'degreased' turn signal switch because I have a new issue - the 'Check Gauges' light is on while running and I notice the voltmeter is set way below its normal charging voltage. So my next step is to diagnose this issue. This problem existed right before I started the turn signal problem so I know my actions have not caused this issue. Looks like a good old fashioned charging issue to me.
One thing I like about my GP is that it has all the gauges including, voltmeter, oil pressure and temperature. Rarely have I seen all 3 on production automobiles.

Glad it worked out, I wiped out the old grease and put a light coat of new white lithium grease on the copper tracks when I did mine. If after you fix the voltage issue, the check gauges light stays on that is very common with these particular years. The circuit board on the cluster itself is the culprit. Rock auto carries the turn signal switches with radio controls.
