Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

You are best off finding motor and tranny together....if this is the route you want to take

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

Id rather make 2k and sell the car for 1500 or so and grab something with a 3800 in it

It's plug and play but it's far easier to drop the motor and trans together through the bottom than it is to disconnect the motor and pull it through the top

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

Is it really plug and play from 3.1 to 3.8 supercharged? Wouldn't you need a different wiring harness?

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

I think the harness is different yeah

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

Engine trans engine harness and pcm from a 99-02 gtp would be best bet.

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

Cool - follow Scotty's method, and you should be good. But just to ease your mind a bit...it would be rare for the head gasket to be toast on a 3.1...but those engines chew through LIM gaskets with a fair amount of regularity. The 3.4 would eat head gaskets, but my 3.1s never did.

Hope the coolant flush helps, and we can start working on your other issues then.
Loopy the 60* V6s are all know for having head gasket issues.

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

I knew i wanted a 3800 I was strong armed into buying Joe. I did my research

If your dad thinks driving 30 minutes to see a car is a reason to have to buy it then he has more issues than any of us know. Many people here have driven hours to look at cars only to turn around and go home empty handed.

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

My parents drove to Florida to buy a GP lol so that should say something.

I've done that for friends, and friends have done that for me. It's how it's done.

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

I have what I have... I guess I'll flush it and drive it till it dies

*3100/3400 are known for head gasket issues. The early 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4DOHC 60°s are not.

Nah, they're turds too. It's just that most 3800 owners don't like to admit it. Either that, or they've never experienced a car with some actual balls.

It is rather unfortunate that your dad strong-armed you into buying this thing. Given everything that is wrong with it, it's a $1k - $1,500 car at best. Agreed that the best thing you can do at this point is just fix up what you can as cheaply as possible, and drive it till a catastrophic failure happens.

Scotty, are you saying oil can't get into the coolant if the head gasket fails between an oil and coolant passage? Before I bought my previous GTP, I test drove a GTX that looked to have oil in the radiator and coolant reservoir (extremely dark brown to black).

Re: Got ****ed around on a craigslist deal please help

Wow...one time my dad and I drove 2 hours to see a 1992 Chevy Cavalier Z24 and we didn't buy it. I bought a 1987 Ford Thunderbird with 66,000 miles on it in 2003....you and your father need to talk LOL.

Listen to scotty.

its so rare that the oil passage run down from the top of the head would ever meet a bad coolant port, and then let oil into the coolant, coolant is under way more pressure in the heads.

its almost impossible to happen. unless you have a oil cooler in the rad, then it can happen if the cooler breaks. but id think the coolant in the engine would be a bigger problem really cause if its pushing oil out, its also sucking coolant back into the engine.
