Get the car scanned?

boosted97

Hey im new here, i have a 97 GTP supercharged with the boost turned up with a 3.2 pulley. A local guy that also has a grand prix said i should scan my car. But i dont know why i need to scan my car because it runs awesome and it is hella fast. Do i need to scan my car? I really dont know what scanning my car even means.

so you have a 3.2 pulley on with no other mods???????????

do you even have headers or a tune and supporting mods for that low of pulley????????

scanning the car means to see whats its reading with the computer.

Like knock and fuel and temps and shiz like that.

if you running that pulley with no other mods your cars gunna become HELLA DEAD very soon.

yea you have to do a whole list of mods just to drop down to a 3.4 pulley. If u have 0 mods and a 3.2 pulley your engine is as good as dead

Yeah Boosted97, can you tell us what all mods are done to the car??

Either you have a bulletproof L67, or theres something you're not telling us, lol

So this isnt good?
The only thing iv done to the car was put on the 3.2 inch pulley onto my supercharger. I bought the pulley off of craigslist several months ago. The car runs great and the engine sounds good to me.
I read that how to mod your 3800 safely thread it was interesting but i still dont get it. I dont want to spend 100s of dollars on my car when its already very fast. I have beat a lot of mid 90s mustangs and my friends dads stock gtp. The only thing i might also do is make a cold air intake for it because its cheap and will probably look cool. my high schools shop has a scanner will that work?

if you want your car to last much longer, put your stock pulley back on or else that thing is gunna blow up. go ahead and make a cold air intake, but it aint gunna help that motor out any.

it may seem fast but your motor is dying on the inside, it cant breath for ****, with all that extra air the smaller pulley is bringing in.

if you where to hook it up to that scanner to measure your KR (knock retard) is prolly gunna be at 10* plus, and thats SUPER BAD.

Basically, what you're doing with that 3.2" pulley, is making the supercharger spin faster. When it spins faster, it makes more boost. More boost = more heat. More heat = Knock Retard. Lots of knock retard = blown motor.

We are telling you know, from experience, you are ****ing your motor up. You're demanding WAYYY more boost, and you're not able to get all that air out of your engine.

When the engine detects Knock, it retards the timing, so you dont blow the motor to hell. The less timing, the less power.

Your car would actually be faster with a Bigger pulley. The more knock, the less horsepower you make.

But if you want your car to last, change that pulley, trust us. I blew my motor and it was totally stock, with a 3.8" pulley.
I probably couldn't even put a 3.2" pulley on my car without it showing knock retard.

The whole point to the Safely Modding your 3800 Powered Car, is doing it Safetly.
In order to run a 3.2" pulley you HAVE to have:

An intake- either a CAI, HAI, or a FWI, something to let the s/c get more air in
Headers-Get all that air that's being sucked it out of the engine
Colder sparkplugs- Keeps the cylinder from getting hotter with all that extra boost
A custom tuned PCM- With that small of a pulley, you need to tune the computer so that everything is running perfectly
An Aftermarket Camshaft-It opens your valves longer, letting all that air in/out.
Rockers-If you dont want to run a cam, you'll need higher ratio rockers
A colder thermostat-A 180degree thermostat wont set off any SES codes, but will keep the engine temps lower
Anything less than that, and you're asking for trouble.

Im 19, and I know all about having the "fastest car at school." I raced everyone there that had a fast car, and beat up on all of them (Camaros, mustangs, trans am, prelude, etc) But if you dont treat your car right, you're not going to have one much longer.

Do you really wanna be another one of the guys that learns the expensive and hard way? Plenty of guys here took that route.

Your choices:
Smart: Read, listen and learn.
Dumb: Assume.

LOL 100's of dollars ha I have 4 grand into my car and still not even on 3.2 yet. Keep running the 3.2 pulley and you will be buying a new engine real quick.

NO a regular ODB2 scanner will not read what your after. You need a scanner that can tune as well to read your parameters of your car like fuel trims, maf frequency, o2, injector pulse width, KR, and other stuff. I know you meant well and thought that just adding a pulley will make your car faster. In theory it does but it is hurting your engine more than its helping it right now. You can add a smaller pulley to your car but do it in moderation. Get some flow modifications like a intake, and exhaust mods and a tune. Then you can add that smaller pulley like a 3.4 instead of the smaller 3.2 that you have.

If I were you i would take off the 3.2 for right now and put the stocker back on. Sell the 3.2 and buy a 3.4 instead. Then buy the remaining parts to safely run it. Like a 3" downpipe or headers, get a tune, get colder plugs like Autolite 104, and finally a 180* thermostat.

Just my $0.02 :th_winking:

Most scanners (ensure you check them) will read almost all the parameters he needs. The only thing to really check for is the manufacturer specific KR. That's the most important parameter for what is being suggested.

And really the parts you need for these cars are not really that expensive. Unless your gettin into the engine then thats a diff story but if its just bolt on stuff then u could prolly get most of for under 700 bucks depending on who u buy from.
If u think ur car sounds good now then wait till u take that pulley off and see what its really suppose to sound like and once u start doin the add ons and gettin all that air out of the engine thats when they start soundin amazing

Ignore these clowns. They spent too much money on they're cars to "be safe". Live on the edge, be dangerous... yours is prolly faster anyways. Just floor it at every red light and have fun.

Oooo and enjoy the fireworks, they'll happen eventually but you gotta pay attention, its a one time show :th_laugh-lol2:

Read, Research, Learn... don't waste money, please, for the sake of your car

thats because its not fast.

you might be lucky to run 14.8.

And thats not fast.

a good 3-3.2 setup can break 12's...
