General Info: Swap your steel oil pan for an aluminum one



Besides most 06-08 Grand Prix which other cars and years should I look for in the JY to snag a pan Bill?

that's the pan you need other ones don't have the motor mount provision and you need the oil pump pick up tube or you will find out
after you have it all on
And your about done with it when you go to put in the oil level sensor

it hits the oil pick up tube


other information you use no gasket oil baffle made in pan factory used gray RTV only

hope this helps I did the swap still have the steel sub frame at this time
 
Billboost37 I recently purchased the aluminum setup mount, pick up and pan off 05 GP there is a bracket on the back that connects to the pan using 1 bolt and connects to engine do you use that along with the engine mount or Is the engine mount OK to run ?
 


that pan to transmission bracket is the primary reason they went to the aluminum pan... was better structural rigidity and less noise and vibration.
you don't need it. but without it the aluminum pan does not add very much to the pie.
 
I think I get this but a few questions guys. Working on 2001 Buick regal supercharged motor (steel frame I'm sure) for a friend who messed up the oil pan. He Ruined the pan and pick up tube.

So after getting the regal apart I remembered my brother had a motor from what he said was from a series 3 motor. I already grabbed pick up tube and oil pan with mount still attached (the motor was modded to fit in a W body (97 cutlass supreme)......

Other thing I noticed was the pan has a gasket and not a built in windage tray ( it was removed i guess, I'm not sure why considering these pans didn't need a gasket right? I hope this is not to confusing.

I'm just trying to see what I may need to do before I try to install it on the 01 regal. grind the frame, cut bracket lip ? etc?




 


You think I could just use a gasket, seeing how I have a new one already... It had a gasket on it when it came off the series 3
 
OK modify as in grind down part of the bracket? Why? I ask why so I'll know exactly what part to modify, does it hit subframe etc its 27 degrees here so just want to as much as possible lol.


I know that you don't use a gasket on this pan just rtv... but there is no windage tray. The car it came from had a gasket instead...does it matter..prob not I guess

Thanks for the pics and I checked out your other thread, I see that you modified the old mount and made it fit, I was under the impression I could use the original mount attached to the aluminum pan.

I can order or try to find a windage tray but ill prob just use a plastic gasket since I don't have the tray.

I guess I'm a little confused but that does makes since, that the engine mount bracket alone may not be sufficient enough to hold the engine in the cradle. I see that bill didn't use it? But glad you clarified that in case I wanted to do it exactly how it should be done.

I may just tell my friend to go ahead and grab the parts especially for the car and leave it factory...
