Gas mpg

as long as I don't floor it I get around 33 mpg Highway and 26-28 city

I also always check my car religiously, i check my tire pressure every other day, oil every other day, trans fluid every week... etc..

I'm very meticulous, if something is wrong I fix it immediately. I am pretty positive that my 15-30 mins spent checking things every other day saves me a lot of money. I never mind checking it because I love the car. Thats just me.

so out of curiosity, i was wondering what you're guys screen reads as far as MPG goes.

mine typically stays around 17, give or take a few 10th's of a gallon.

Thats city...

i can get it up to 23 if i drive on the freeway for a few hours.

Hey my fan blower resister is out on my 97 Grand Prix SE, so the only way to turn on trip computer is by a toggle switch previous owner hooked up which also turns on blower motor, (will replace resister down the road sometime), anyhow when I have to use the blower motor my mpg say's 3.8 and even after going to tacoma wa. from seattle wa( aproximatly 43 miles rd trip on highway) it may jump to 3.9 or 4.3 at the most, then I have to turn toggle back off cause the fan blower is annoying. but when I have to turn on fan blower again it's back at 3.8.
I asume it gets hella lot better milage then that just wonder why it doesn't jump to 17 - 20 mpg on the highway after putting that amount of miles on it.

Here's a picture of 97 after tree almost landed on it yesterday.
Post more as soon as I can.

after I changed the thermostat, put the FWI on, colder plugs and wires, my gas mileage went from 33 to 24 mpg!!! I haven't changed my driving style at all...

I need to do a tune I guess

hi to everyone...I saw that everyone has a better mileage than me...actually I make 250 miles with the full tank, god it seems impossible I dont understand whats wrong with the car..I got it used since I just moved in California, its a 97 GT with 91k miles on..

I figured my trip computer out, I just have to reset it every time I turn the toggle on,(got to get that new fan blower resister fast) I got tops 28 - 31 mpg on a 20 mile highway trip to tacoma, and 27 mpg on the way back must be the higher incline or something, havent checked the city driving mpg yet.

So average 28 - 31 Highway & 18 - 20 City, not to bad I guese.

I have a 97 gp 3.8 and i usally get about 400miles on 15 gallons with a combination of city and express. When i do a longexpress trip i have gone as highas 430 miles on 15 gallons.

24-26 city-32 highway at a 70 mph set cruise. the best i have ever seen was on a straight stretch for about 15 miles, it slowly started from 30 all the way to 38.
I'm guessing a constant speed with no turning or on off pedal it may get better

Best I've had was just over 42mpg...

Was so impressive that I had to get a pic of it...

(ps- first post here.. been reading for a while though.. Thanks for all the good info on this site)

I can get my DIC to read that high too. But that doesn't mean you are going to average that mpg. My numbers are all averages, done by hand, not trusting the mostly inaccurate DIC. Although my DIC is more accurate than most, I always double check every tank by hand and record.

Just because your DIC says that when you reset it while cruising doesn't mean you are really going to average that much by the end of the tank.

Very true, it was just cool to see it say 42 mpg.. my car averages is about 21 mpg. On a trip from LA to Las Vegas, i'll usually pull about 32 mpg or so...

This is where I usually track my MPG... 98 Grand Prix GTP (Pontiac Grand Prix) | Fuelly

Read my comments from before about you "Best Ever":

So putting numbers like those out there is just dumb. It is not accurate. Even my V8 truck can get 50mpg coating downhill. But I don't go around telling people that is what MPG my truck gets.

I don't want to argue... I don't have that knowledge that some of you do on here about Pontiacs...But that wasn't downhill, nor a 30 sec trip. My best was a 60 mile trip on the highway from S. Colorado Springs into Denver, CO.

Number may not have been perfectly accurate, but I figured that counts for something....Don't acctually remember where I got the pic though. Just threw it in cuz it's related.

I understand that your DIC may have actually read that. But again, that is a not an accurate measurement of your true fuel economy. Simply your fuel economy for that one single trip. Thus, not very useful. I see it no differently than someone coasting down a hill and reporting a high fuel economy.

Point being, most people try to compare average fuel economies. Just like manufactures have to report what the average fuel economy of a vehicle is. Not the best that it can get in one random situation.

And FWIW, Colorado Springs is higher in altitude than Denver, so it was a downhill trip. :th_winking:

True..you loose about 1000ft. in elevation, but the trip is no downhill scene. It's up and down, up and down.

So if I drive from colorado springs, to tri-cities WA, and back. All four times averaging per tank 32-38 MPG...what am I supposed to make of that?

Well like myself i wasnt claiming to have run that on a tank just saying what i see on my DIC. The best i had was going from Newport KY to Gatlinburg, TN and i recorded 35-36 that was a non stop 70mph set cruise, not bad. But on my regular daily driving on a full tank of gas and when it runs out i only estimate a good 23-25

My car is well... bad... I get 18mpg on a tank. I do live in a medium sized town, and there is alot of stop and go traffic wherever i go. but Its still kinda low in my opinion.

Am I correct in observing that the newer GPs (04-08s) don't get the mileage the older ones do?

Also - does anyone know how much of an impact the oncoming cooler weather has on fuel economy?
