gas gauge

i have 2000 grand prix that the the gas gauge says full when i turn it on and then drops to empty the pump is working and ideas what the problem could be?

Possibly a bad fuel level sensor in the tank. A lot of GM cars around that year had the same issue. Either that or maybe a bad wire somewhere.
 
more than likely the fingers that sweep across the level sensorhave worn down to nothing and send false signals to the dash.

Pull the pump and replace the part and it works good as new.

Go to youtube and search bonneville fuel level sensor, there are 3 videos of how to replace it.
