Gas Gauge Question?

Just bought a '96 Pontiac Grand Prix SE for our daughter and are wondering is the gas gauge supposed to reset to "E" when the car is off? It stays on whatever amount is in the tank--at least I think it does. I believe its actually reading correctly but shouldn't it be resetting to "E" when you turn the car off? Or does the gauge stay at whatever gas is currently in the tank? The gauge is dropping as we drive it so I believe that its reading accurately on whats in the tank and not stuck on one reading.

Thanks guys. :th_thumbsup-wink:

id not worry about it if the gauge is accurate while driving and your not running out of gas.

some cars the needle drops to E when turned off. some stay where they are. im not even sure what my regal does lol all i know is it works as it should.

OK cool that's what I was thinking. The wife is freaking out about it but I believe since it actually "moves" after driving that it is indeed working properly and reading whats actually in the tank. I had a '96 Olds Cutlass with the same engine and pretty much the same gauges and I can't remember what that read if it reset upon turning off the vehicle OR if it constantly stayed at what level was currently in the tank.

Thanks for answering.
