Gas Gauge not working, I've tried everything!!!

Hi again guys! I've had this issue with my car since I got it. Gas gauge won't work. It's stuck at a hair over half way.

Things we've already tried:

  • replaced entire fuel pump assembly - nothing
  • checked for bad wires - nothing
  • connected purple fuel sensor wire directly to sending unit - when disconnected it goes to empty, when again connected goes back to the hair over half a tank.


Now the oddest thing. The cluster says it was a 1998 manufacture, and the car was manufactured in Sept. of 1996.

Car is a 1997 Grand Prix SE 3.8L non-supercharged.

Please help I'm at wits end! THANKS IN ADVANCE

ALSO! If cluster is swapped out, do you thing it'll work or not? I read something about the 1997 gas gauge working differently ...and I'm pretty sure that the cluster was swapped without telling me before I bought it. Otherwise, it would be the same manufacture year right?

I kid..

Search for any technical bulletins for your year. The cluster seems like it's been replaced and IIRC there was a known issue with 97's and maybe adding a resistor.
