FWI vs others

just call me john-o
Anyone know how the intense K&N FWI is? I basically just want to know if I should buy the CAI that is like $240, or just go with the FWI that intense makes for $99. I am N/A, and have no other mods, and i'm looking to make this my first mod...all opinions are welcome.

thanks,

FWI stands for fender well intake. The Pipe actually runs into a hole in the drivers side fenderwell. That is where the Filter is placed. Where the CAI and K&N kits use a box in the factory location to place the Filter. I personally think the CAI or K&N intakes look alot better, but also cost alot more. But for the price the intense kit will work just as good maybe a little better, i can see it actually getting cooler air. But you also could suck in water easier if you live in a state that it rains heavy often.

The K&N is an overpriced peice of junk. You would be saving a loty of money and getting the same results by just running a cone off of the MAF (yes you can do that very easily even tough it's an 04. If you have ever took one apart you should know)

You options for a FWI or cold air intake is the intense (wich is also overpriced for what it is) or a custom made one that is made out od PVC pipe or something like that.

But other than what is mentioned above that's all for the 04 and up's

so buy some pvc pipe, pipe clamps, black paint, a cone filter, and just run it off of the stock intake?

Yeah. For making a FWI without actually going into the fender what you can do is just make it to where the filter is as close to the opening in the fender well as possible.

You'll probably need a coupler to go from the MAF to the pipe.(2 worm gear clamps for that) and then stick the filter on the end of the pipe (one worm gear clamp for that)

Just buy the same size pipe as the filter opening.

so whats the deal with the pcm then, will i take that out? does it need to be remounted? should i get a new one? is that inside the maf? i don't know much about the air intake system, so maybe i should get a lesson on that first...

The PCM is inside of the stock air box. You will just take it out of the air box and leave it sit on the car and possibly fasten it down in some way to keep it from rattling.

But that's it.

Not really. It depends on what you do.

You don't HAVE to do anything with the exhaust but to avoid a SES light comming on then you do.

Depending on what system u go with depends on what u do with location of the PCM. If wanted to do the FWI really all u would have to do is remove the upper half of the air box to make clearance for the tube to reach the Hole in fenderwell. Basically leaving the PCM where it was from the Factory. The CAI kit actully has instructions on how to mount the PCM to the new intake and i beleive the K&N has similar instructions.

Hope that Helps. :)

FYI in case u didnt know your PCM is your engines brain.. Powertrain Control Module!

i think i'm going to do the PVC FWI this weekend...i have sunday off, so i'm going to try to rig it to as close to the fenderwell as possible. does it matter what size air filter i buy? and does brand really matter? are k&n's really worth it?

id stay away from one too cheap. Airraid, K N , anyone of the better companys filter would work. Size is up to you really how much u wanna spend.

is there any difference in the sizes, or shapes as far as performance goes? i.e. longer cone=better airflow?
