Fuel tank is 12-13 gallons?

Everytime I fill up, the pump says around 11-12 gallons. What does this mean? Non-stock tank? I thought these cars had 17 gallon tanks. I have an '00 i bought about 6 months back.

Edit; I have a gtp if you want to move this, but it shouldn't matter.

Dont quote me, but I think the level is mounted to the fuel pump. Not really sure how you'd adjust it. But I know you can....lol
*EDIT: After doin some reading, people are saying you need to replace the sending unit on the pump.

yes, its on the pump. haynes manuale warned to be careful because its easy to bump and then the level is off.

hmm, alright. I'll take replacing it into consideration. If it was bad, it would still display full tank when the tank was full?

How many miles do you get to a tank? just wondering.

The float normally is not the issue, its the fuel level sensor that moves back and forth (aka up and down) with the float on the fuel pump.

On this small sensor/ electrical flied thing are 2 small prongs things with teeth on them, those make contact with the sensor and thus give you the reading on the gauge. Over time the teeth wear down and start to give false readings and kinda glitch the sensor.

You can replace the part with the teeth and have new teeth always be in contact with the sensor.

Gotcha, thanks five.

I'm not exactly sure but i just filled up tonight so I'll reset my trip odometer in the morning. If there's a way to find out if the gas gauge isn't reading correctly I'd want to try it.

A better question would be do you fill up as soon as the light comes on? If so or close to it then thats about right but if you push it past and the needle down below E then it should be taking more. I have a 98 which has a gallon bigger tank and when the light comes on and I fill up I can typically put around 14 gallons in meaning there is still 4 more gallons left in mine.

Specifically which light? the low fuel on gauges?

usually that doesn't come on, i usually fill up when the dic flashes low.

Yes, BAM! In my experiences, where your filling up and the gallons you report are about right. Just know that if you had to you could go a good deal further. I took my GT 74 miles after the light came on, never ran out. It always averaged 18.5 mpg's too. Now I have a good job and gas up more often so I haven't had a chance to see how far the GTP will go. Maybe since I'm switching to e85 soon that's how I will run the gas outta my car and just carry a 5 gallon jug of e85 and my laptop to flash the e85 tune.

I have a 97 GT with an 18 gallon tank. I get 20mpg on average with 93octane, and avg 280-290miles before my gauge shows E. I know that I can get 340-350miles, but have yet to push it beyond 325mi.

Lately ive let it get closer to E only cuz i want to extend my fuel milage as much as i can and when i refill its usually reading 15-15.5 gallons. Otherwise my gas milage has increased nicely from when i was stock. Getting at least 40-50 miles more per tank plus im drivin with less lead foot too.

Nothing says lovin' like burning out your fuel pump.

I dont let it get down near empty all the time.Prob the last 3-4 fillups out of the hundreds of times ive filled up.Plus sooner or later im gonna change out the pump anyway.
