has anyone ever had a problem with there gas tank not filling up all the way?

i bought this car about a month ago and filled it up. i drove it about 250 miles and it was low on gas so, i stopped and filled it up. it only took 11.5 gallons. at first i thought it was just the fuel guage not working right so, next time it read low i just ignored it. well needless to say i ran out of gas. went to fill it up...11.5 gal. everything i read says that it should be a 17 gal. tank.

i guess i shoulden't gripe. its less gas to carry around for that impromptu race but, it sucks having to stop every 250 miles for gas.

any ideas? i was thinking that it might be a vent problem but everything visible looks good. oh yeah. it's a 99 GTP and i LOVE it.

It could absolutely be a vent problem. The fuel capacity is 17 gallons. Might start looking into that issue.
 
hay messege me about this man i notice this also on my 99 GTP i was pretty low o gas put 12 gallons in her and the pump shut off??? but when i filled it up my gauge was on the F so??? is that right or??
 
It's kinda weird because on my 97 GT, when the fuel gets under a quarter of a tank, the gas hand will move up and down. Sometimes it will stay down long enough for the low fuel light to come on. Stop to put gas in it and only get 12-14 gals in it. You might be having the same problem. Just haven't gotten brave enough to see how much further she'll go once I get to that point to see if the guage is actually f'ing up at that point or she just sucks it down that fast which I dought.
 
on my 99 when the guage reads around 1/8 of a tank, i can hear the fuel pump cavitating when i come to a stop. it did it so bad that at one stoplight it died on me. it started back up and i made a bee line for the gas station. filled it up and it took 11.5 gallons and the guage read full. i know it's not getting bad milage cause i checked it a couple of times. i'm averaging right at 21mpg.....but i got a heavy foot.

next time it gets low on gas i'll back it up the ramps and start poking around. i've heard of a simalar problem with jeep wranglers not fillling up all the way because the fill vent tube inside the tank is to long.

if i don't find anything on the outside i guess i'll pull the pump and take a look on the inside. it will be a good excuse to buy that snap-on borescope i've been wanting;).

The plastic tanks are slightly larger (01+), but the last time I ran outta gas (long time ago) I took a cell phone pic at the pump completely full couldn't hold another drop lol.... Btw I wish I got 250miles outta 11.5 gallons:th_crying1:

they actually design cars so that when the gauge reads empty it's not really empty because they don't want you to run out of gas...in this case it's quite possible that at an eighth to a quarter tank there is still 4 or 5 gallons in the tank when you fill up...I once watched a news report where the guy drove over 30 more miles after the needle reached E which had to be at least 2 gallons
 
Well they also modify the tanks as well. They will use the same tank across a few lines of cars but change the vent tube I believe it is or something like that so that you can only fill up with so much gas. WHY they find that necessary is beyond me. But I know amongst the Jeep and Rodeo communities there are certain variants that benefit from dropping the tank and modifying this tube or whatever it is.

Also, if you look at the average range of most vehicle, particularly passenger cars and such, it tends to be around the 450 - 500 mile range. Why this is so, again, Im not sure but it seems purposeful. If it were available, I would put a larger fuel tank in the GTP. Id like to have about a 20 - 22 gallon tank in the thing to be honest. I do enough driving that such a thing would be beneficial to me.

i know what you're talking about. my dodge truck is set up that way. when the needle points to E i can go about another 20-30 miles but... my gtp is not this way. believe me. when the needle points to E you better find a station NOW. i can even hear the fuel pump cavitating when i come to a stop.

i know the 4 cyl jeeps had a longer vent tube in the gas tank to make it a 15gal tank. if you cut it down it would make it a 20 gal tank. why they did this is beyond me. i'm with SynS. i would love t have a 20-25gal tank.

Yes it was quite a while back. But saying those were the days is all perspective.... I'm only 24 an I clearly remember paying .99 for premium for about a month in the year 2000 (was typically $1.15~1.20 or so) I was 16 an loving every min behind the wheel.

If anyone asks me... THOSE were the days.
 
The most I've gotten with my 99 GTP is between 250 and 275 miles and right on the E mark. I have only been able to put 14 gallons in also and I am supposed to have a 17 gallon tank. I haven't tried to put more miles on for fear of running out. Dealer says still 1-2 gallons in the tank, but i dont know.
 
I have 2 GTP's, one is a 2000 and one a 2001.....

The 2000 when on E will only take about 13 gallons of gas, but the 01 when on E will take 17.8 gallons.

Sheryl and I tested out a theory on a road trip back from Florida when we bought the 00 GTP and this is what we found. Filled both cars up at the same time with Super Unleaded. Drove about 100 miles and the 01 needle was at about 7/8 of a tank. The 00 was at 3/4. Another 100 miles down the road, the 01 was at a 1/2 tank, and the 00 was at a little under a 1/4. At 250 highway miles, the 00 had both low fuel lights on, so we stopped and the 00 only took 12 gallons, and the 01 took 12.5 gallons (but the 01 fuel guage was reading over 1/4 tank).

For some reason not all the fuel sending units are calibrated the same. We have found with the 00 that we can drive almost 100 miles when both low fuel lights come on, but on the 01 its only about 30.

Try this at your own risk, and I would recommend having a gas can in the trunk just in case, but I think its your sender that is not reading a TRUE empty tank

I have experienced with not only mine, but two of my friends have also noticed that on the 2001 GT's, the fuel gague can be quite a deciever. with my car, the most I've ever filled up was 18 gallons even, and I was driving it down the highway, didnt realize I was BELOW E, and rolled into the gas station at about 5 miles an hour with 0 gas and the engine off. Lucky me, eh? Anyways, for about 3 gallons after you start the car again, the call will remain on Full. It goes down normally after that. But, it gets to E when it has about 3 gallons left, so I guestimate how much more driving I have after that. However, this is on MY car, mine just might be slightly on the stranger side of things, so I don't reccomend running out of gas based on my calculations. I have found however, that my computer for the gas used, is extremely accurate so I use this in replace for watching my fuel gague. I don't know if all 2001's have the computer with the - Oil life %, Range, Gas used, and mpg - feature on the dash, but if yours has it I'm sure it works as good as mine does :D

Just figure I'd throw that little thing with the Empty and Full false readings out there for other people...
 
well, i looked all around and can't figure this out. it's definitely not a sending unit problem. i usually drive till i can hear the fuel pump cavitating at stoplights and then i'll go fill it up. the most it holds is 12 gal. the only thing i can think of is this car has had some damage underneath (looks like it went over a big curb sideways) and someone replaced the tank with one from a 4cyl. grand am(?) i dunno....

OFF TOPIC -Just like to point out this guy is from from FL and he said EH! lol born and raised in Florida, But I do have a good friend from Australia who then moved to canada, who then moved down here :P So I may have picked it up there lol
