Fuel Pump?

I have a 2003 GT and recently the car began to have trouble starting and soon when it did start it would run like it had a misfire and then quit. I replaced my fuel filter and now it will stay running but it's still very odd the way it idles. Starts fine and starts at about 2000 rpms then comes down to about 700 rpms and barely stays running and still chugs like it has a misfire. So my question is, is my fuel pump on the way out or could this be something else. Thanks for any and all help. It's much appreciated.

Is your SES light on, on the dash?

My guess if the fuel pump was going bad, it would not run at all. But best way to check is to get a fuel pressure gauge and find out what the fuel pressure is at idle. I believe it should be over 40 psi.
 
Yeah, the fuel pressure is supposed to be over 40psi at idle. I would also suspect the fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure is good then I would be looking at the regulator.
 
I have heard that a good way to tell if the fuel pressure regulator is bad is to disconnect the vacuum line running to it. If there is fuel in the vacuum line, you need to change the regulator.

Just a thought.

Ahhh, well there ya go. Now that you have said that, I have heard that before. Thanks for posting that.
 
I was having simular trouble where I would just be drive, slow nothing heavy and it would missfire, had it put on the computer and came to find out that the EGR vavle is shot. SO maybe the same is going on for you, maybe. Disconnect the plug into the EGR valve and see if it helps. it will not hurt to test it by leaving the plug off and driving it to see if that is the problem.
 


Can someone tell me where the fuel regulator is located so I check that. And where is the EGR valve? Sorry bout the questions, still learning.

fuel pressure regulator should be on the front side of the engine, passenger side, decent sized metal canister on the fuel rail, with a vaccum line going to it.

the EGR valve is on the back side of the motor, driver's side. one portion of it bolts to the stock manifold, with a foil-ish looking tube on it.
