fuel pump question?

RedneckGTP

New member
looks like the fuel pump went out on my GTP... when key is first turned on it will climb up to the 50psi that I think is required (not sure specific number for this car, but around 50).

once started it drops pretty quick to below 10 and the car stalls... I dont see or smell any leaks. I think its pretty safe to assume its the pump.

SO, what should I get? its a stock GTP. no major plans to mod it. maybe little things. filter/plugs/wires and a smaller pulley AT MOST...

I have heard people say racetronix? or something like that. havent had any luck finding one for my car. only seem to find it for the LS1 cars.

looked at orielly's and I can get a bosch for 270 something. but its the whole assembly. can I buy just the pump and screen some where for these?

Sounds a bit like a fuel pump resistor issue. What year is the car?

The pump priming to 50psi seems good. If pressure drops to basically 0 and it stalls, that sounds like the pump isn't being turned back on after the prime.

I got the car from my buddy and he said it was a new pump last year or so.

but I think the pump was just running and running but, you may be right.

where is that guy at, and what is the fix for it? or how can I test it?

The resistor is on your firewall I believe. Or behind the pass. Headlight I can't remember on the older body style.

Just cut it out and solder/connect the wires together. There's only 2. In and out.

Or do what he said.

that wont shorten the life span of the pump? or cause something else to act up? running in the "highspeed" mode of which you speak?

what actually went wrong that is causing the pump to quit?

well we will see. is this just a sign of the pump going bad and me bandaiding it? or is it just the crap 2 speed thing that GM tried to do with these fuel pumps and high mode should be fine?

Ill drive it for a while and see I guess. looking to take it on a 3k mile trip in the next few months (holidays). if its gonna go bad hopefully it does before then!

The fuel pump resistor is there for off boost driving or something. Stock fuel pump will live on just fine without it. If you do a FP rewire, you bypass it anyway, and there are plenty of people on here with the rewire done with no ill effects.

drove fine all day. thanks guys!

topped it off, and added a little octane booster. actually seems happier and seems like a stutter that it had when trying to get on it is gone. ocasionally when nailing it to get on the freeway or into traffic (gotta drive aggressively down here) it had a moment of hesitation. So i guess may the fuel pump trying to switch over was the problem anyway?
