Fuel Level Sending Unit

I have a 2000 Grand Prix GT that is supposed to have an 18 gallon gas tank. I've been running my own "experiment" lately because a friend thinks my fuel level sending unit is bad. If I let it get down to where the low fuel light comes on and fill it to capacity, it only let's me put on 12 gallons. I can't think 1/3 of my gas tank is low fuel, so where is the missing 6 gallons? Is it my sending unit on the fritz? I feel like I fill up more often than needed. Thanks!

your car still hold 3 to 4 gallons when the light comes on.

when the light comes on in my regal, its only 14 gallons to fill it as well.

When mine comes on i put 12-13 gallons in it it's normal. I've driven about 80 miles on the low fuel light with no problems other than an unhappy fuel pump.

I've filled mine up once and it was about 14.35 gallons....my dic is off it was reading 12.8...it is only .3 gallons off now :D

Normal.. it's a gauge..not a precision instrument. We all deal with the same bs. The W aka worthless body cars seem to be the worst offenders I've found

My Regal will toss the light, shoot out the LOW message on the DIC after it gets below 40miles remaining and ..... well let's say I've pushed that envelope way past 40 miles. Filling up, the most I've achieved was 16+ gallons.
