Fuel Gauge

Howdy ya'll. The fuel gauge on my GP GT esentially slowly moves around the whole range of the gauge and is not an accurate representation of the amount of fuel in the tank. Has this been a common problem, if so what was the fix? I'm not sure if its just a bad sensor or a voltage problem. I havnt found any answers with google or this forum search so there it is. Any ideas guys?
 


If its reading inaccurate, there are two fixes that I know of. There is an access panel in the trunk of these cars to get to the fuel pump and spending unit assemblies. You can remove the assembly and clean the contacts of the sending unit but its just a temporary fix. Best thing to do is replace the whole assembly, fuel pump and all.
 
The most economical solution would be to just change the sending unit that is clipped to the side of the fuel pump. 120 bucks at gmpartsdirect.com
 
mines the same way. it will stay "completely full" for 100 miles. the 3/4 mark means half a tank. i was not aware there could be an actual problem causing this. for $120, i will gladly learn to live with it
 
try using some chevron techron with your next tank of gas. That stuff does a good job of cleaning and it's the cheapest place to start.
 
well lets see... i'll go ahead and try some techron, but net stop i'll get the new part, i dont think i need to buy the entire assembly O_o.
 


i found a lower milage GP at an autowrecker and pulled the sending unit out and it was almost mint. Cheapest way by far.

I had the same problem. Ended up just replacing my fuel pump. Easy job, and it fixed the problem.
 
I had the same problem stopped doing it after a couple weeks and has been fine for about 2 years or so now.
 
ok techron with seafoam, then i'll visit pick and pull (the local freaking huge junk yard)... not sure how the fuel pump will fix it but I havnt seen how that system is put together yet, if the sensor is attatched to the casing of the pump then I understand. again thanks for all the help

I don't think using both would work. Just fill your gas tank up and pour the necessary amount of techron in, drive that for a tank and see if there's any improvement. If not, the sending unit itself is probably bad. Same exact issue in my blazer and the fuel pump had to be replaced to get it fixed. Only reason i bothered was because after 1 1/2 years driving like that the whole fuel pump went bad.
 
The fuel pump comes as an assembly with the sending unit and the sending unit is what causes the problem. The contacts that touch together that increase and decrease the resistance as the float moves get worn out over time so they do not contact the full range of the fuel level causing the gauge to do some funky things!
 
ok a couple tanks of seafoam and then ill replace it if its still bad, wont know for a while though... i have another 3 months to go in afghanistan boo
