Front wheel / hub bearing options?

All,

I am looking for opinions here. My 2001 GTP has 144k miles on it. Three years ago both front bearings were replaced at about 108k miles with Moog parts from Rock Auto. I was hearing a very loud growling noise from the front end sort of like a 4x4. Changing the bearings resolved the issue. About a year later, I heard a similar noise and checked the bearings again and found play in the passenger side. I was able to get the bearing replaced under warranty after only 10k miles of use through Rock Auto.

So fast forward till today. I am hearing a similar noise but I was a little reluctant to think that the bearings could be bad again only after 30k miles on the driver's side and roughly 20k miles on the passenger side. I was almost thinking it was a CV joint but I don't hearing any popping or clicking sounds. The sounds almost goes away when turning to the right at higher speeds which would load the driver's side therefore placing suspicion on the passenger side.

I took it to the dealer today for an inspection to check this issue plus a few others. They just called and said that it is the passenger side wheel bearing. They wanted around $650 so I told them no.

Can the wheel bearing be bad and still not not have any play?
Also, if so, what replacement bearing should I buy now? Do I try to get an AC/Delco one or is there another option?

Clearly the Moog bearings from Rock Auto aren't of the highest quality considering how long mine lasted.

Thanks!

I've got an 06 GP and did the rear bearings about a year and 30k miles ago with Timken bearings. No problems yet. I need to do the fronts now and ordered Timken from Rock Auto. They're waiting for me to put them in...maybe this weekend.

Moog also makes some. My brother had an SKF go out in 1 year. He's now on Moog's as am I with no issues.

Anyone know what size socket needed to remove bearing nut from an '06 GP?
It's our only driver and once I tear it down I'm walking back to autozone if I need anything.

I working on my '03 right now. I'm guessing it's not that different. Likely either 13mm or 15mm, seems like just about everything on these cars are about 5 different sizes: 8, 10, 13, 15, 18.

If you intend on doing much other work on your car, it's probably worth getting a basic set of at least 3/8 drive metric sockets.

Timken or SKF. Also, are you torquing the axle nuts to the right spec?

Yes, I am using torque wrenches and pulling the specs from the service manuals.

My wheels bearings are the 1st design with the metal clips which puts the AC/Delcos at $200 per hub otherwise the 2nd design AC/Delcos are comparable in price to Moog, Skf or Timken.

Lol noooooooo. This is an axle nut. Scotty is right about the size

I drove on worn out factory one for like 3 years cause I didnt want to spend the money on a car I was always thinking I was going to get rid of. Finally replaced them with new OEM from GM a few years ago and probably 50k miles or more since then and still tight.
