Hey, newbie here,I have a 99 gt, 3.8 and I have 310,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new. It is totally stock. A great car but now I have a growl in the front and am sure it is both wheeling bearings.
1) Where can I get them the best and cheapest?
2) any tips for install would be greatly appreciated.
3) I envision a total front end rebuild so any of those tips would help.

While shopping around, INSIST on Timken hubs. Don't mind Spade, he likes to try and intimidate the FNGs...but his condenscension does have quite a bit of truth to it: why rebuild the front end? New LCAs, new polyurethane bushings, and replace the old suspension with new stuff. The stuff I used was MOOG and KYB mounts, GR2 shocks and struts, the heaviest GTP springs available, GMPP handling kit, NextLevel (who is now out of business, use BMR instead) strut tower braces (STBs), Timken bearings, and SOON will I be using the ZZP LCAs.
 
Rick, Timken is no longer the best on the market. Thanks for trying to 1up me though.

He didn't say what was wrong with his front end, good job jumping to conclusions, Rick.
 
That used to be correct. That is no longer the case.

theres not a lot to the front end, tie rod end links, inner tie rods, and just get a whole new lower control arms. wheel bearings stick with the timkins, and struts. if you go to partsgeek.com look up all the parts and total at the check out, if you google partsgeek prom codes the more you spend the more off they give you so bundle up if you can.

and after you change what needs changing you will need an alignment, so have an appointment set up for the next day or asap.

i just picked up a pair of dorman lca's for 98 bucks shipped a while back from PG

and im not sure if the how to write ups are working yet since the new look here, they were all not working last time i checked.
 
yeah and you have to realize that everybody's driving style is different and someones suspension/alignment and other things will play in the fact of how long a certain part (in this case a bearing) lasts. Timken IS FOR SURE not as good as they used to be and got their reputation for....I do research at the plant almost every week as i know plenty of people that co-op there and I've done work for them. I'm not saying they are terrible, but I am sure as **** not saying they are great either. Just buy something with preferrably a 3 year warranty like the moog/nationals at advance.

You're totally right, Spade, he never did say what was wrong with his front end, but I was letting him know what there is to replace. Scotty gave the better answer to what I was trying to say, anyway.
 


1)SKF Bearings, made in the USA and have been better than Timkin's for a while now.

B)Also do yourself a favor and go to harbor freight and buy the axle nut socket set for $25, it's really useful.

3)Moog Lower control arms, Tie-rods like raybestos from autzone are great they are sealed better than that boot on cheapos. and KYB GR-2 Struts with a new set of springs would make that car handle perfect.

D) while your in there a GMPP front sway bar and endlinks runs about $70 through Summit Racing, and is definatly worth the money as most stock swaybars will crack.

Yeah that should just about cover that if you want to re-build the front end.

But Seriously SKF's you can get through NAPA and are the best out there IMO.
 
Hey, thanks for all the help. I saw front wheel bearing on ebay for 72.00 for both?? My advance and napa want 120.00 for 1 bearing. Are the moog 2x as good? Should I by the 2 bearings off of ebay. Seem kinda funny they are so cheap. Let me know what yall think!!
 
Timkens arent what they used to be for sure but they are definantly better than the stores value brand. I got one of each from autozone and after 6 months the value brand one is already starting to go the timken still seems ok tho. Timkens you get the 3 year warranty with so if you dont mind spending the time changing them out id get them, but moog/national or SKF would definantly be better. If you get the set of 2 for 72 dollars you will be replacing the within a year almost guarented
 


What do you guys think about the duralast brand? I have one i want to replace soon and would like to find the best replacement.

Moog at advance auto look good.....especially with all the coupon codes available. I can get like $35 off of one.
