Front sway bar

Well, I had the crap startled outta me a few days ago. I was turning, coming out of a parking lot at low speeds (<10mph) and there was a loud BANG THUMP THUD CLUNK CLUNK from the front of the car.

I immediately pulled over in the next parking lot but didn't see anything obviously broken under the car. I went home and occasionally there was a clunking sound from the front of the car. (I mean occasionally. I tried to reproduce it by going over bumps, hard braking, etc and couldn't get it to do it. :th_wtf:

I drove it home and parked it, and during that drive no noise.

Drove it to work the next morning and it made a clunking noise occasionally. Didn't seem to matter if I was driving on a flat road, turning etc.

So I parked it and finally today crawled under there and did an inspection.

The sway bar snapped in two! That kind of explains the godawful loud noise when it happened.

Long story short - should I just go to RockAuto and try to find a replacement or should I look around and see if there's an upgraded bar available? 1997 GTP.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find a GMPP bar. The local parts place can get the OEM one if I can't find one around here.

the link I gave is for a GMPP bar. if you do both front and rear you'll get a ni8ce improvement in handling overall.

The shipping was more than the cost of the bar, but thankfully the local GM dealer was able to get it for about $170 CAD. After exchange, that's only $50 above the exchange rate and I don't have to pay extra shipping to get it here. That's a miracle, usually parts here are double or sometimes triple what you pay in the US.

When searching for the rear bar, I came up with 12498642, does anyone know if that's the correct PN#?

if the oem bar is hollow, you might want to consider returning it and getting a solid one. after the ends finally gave out on mine, i replaced it with a dorman. tightened the front end up quite a bit
